Hi

I have just took my BG which has gone down to 3.9 and I am not sure if this is something to worry about

My waking BG was 5.4 and after 20g porridge with some blueberries and raspberries, I took it again an hour later and it was 5.8. Two hours later 4.5 and now, after three hours 3.0. I have some walnuts and baby bel in my drawer at work and have just grabbed a handful of the nuts and am nibbling the cheese - I will take it again in another hour but was wondering will this be good enough to raise my BG

Thanks

Julie

Not sure after reading your post whether the level is 3 or 3.9 mmol/l ???

Either way, you should take some quick acting carbs.......not slow acting, to raise your level into the safer area above 4 mmol/l. Only when the level is higher should you then have a small carby snack to stabilise the levels.

Porridge is slower acting carbs so the effect will be much later, this is why when people say that they can manage porridge we always tell them to test much later. It will probably start to rise soon.
Take too many carbs to correct and you may start a 'rollercoaster' effect up and down.

Hi Cugila

Tested at 3 on my One Touch Vita meter. I have just had a half cup of hot chocolate and will test again after the hour.

Thanks for responding so quickly and for the link :)

Hot Chocolate.......mmmmmh !!! :D

Keep some Glucose/Dextrose Tabs with you in future. Take 2 or 3 if that low again and test after around 10 - 15 mins. Fast acting.

Thank you so much for your help.

I will get some Glucose Tabs to keep with me (and at work) - only been diagnosed since November and this has not happened before so I was a bit unsure as what to do.

I am so grateful for this forum - I honestly don't know what I would have done without it.

Thanks again

Glucose tabs are great, but basically you need something that will get about 15g of sugar into your system quickly.

Those mini cans of coke are the perfect size.... as i hate the taste of gluco tabs and they always make my mouth feel funny lol.
Whatever you use, make sure it's very quick. Bread, crackers etc isn't fast enough.... save them for 1/2 hour later to keep your levels high.
It can be a bit unnerving, did you have any symptoms?

I felt light headed and shakey and needed a wee  Once I thought about it logically and had a look at the forum I grabbed a half cup of hot chocolate, which has seemed to right everything again (tested 15 mins after at 4.7, another 15 mins later still 4.7 and then an hour later at 5.2) First time this has happened since I have been testing so I probably panicked a bit

Julie,

Glucotabs or jelly-babies are my preference when dropping low. Those post-breakfast readings are really great (but a little low later in the morning) and perhaps tomorrow you could try eating 30g of porridge instead of 20g to see if this stops your blood glucose dropping, I was going to suggest this yesterday when you posted your 3 hour reading was 4.3, just remember to test again if you do and do come back with the results.
