Just wondering - re-occuring symptoms

Hi all,

Just wondering about this ............ When I was diagnosed 3 weeks ago as T2, my main complaint (and what got me to the doc in the first place) was a VERY dry mouth, especially in the morning. It felt like I had dehydrated during the night and the feeling was there throughout the day, as if struggling to hydrate again.

When I spoke to the doc and he told me I was officially T2, he said that the dryness should go, when changing diet. On a low carb diet and indeed the dry/dehydrated feeling went away in the first two weeks.

However, now it seems to be coming back - started yesterday morning and had the same slight feeling this morning.

I am doing around 30g Carbs a day and getting 3 great meals and two small snacks and am not feeling hungry at all. I am not feeling light-headed (well I am, but because of the wine which I am not used to!!) - I exercise about 6 miles a day (1x4 miles and 1x2 miles) by brisk walking.

Until today I used to have 1 or 2 plain digestives with some cheese around 9pm as my only concession to the "processed flour rule" and I am just wondering if perhaps the relative high carb would be an influence? I will usually do some light floor exercise around 11pm, about 1 hour before going to bed.

Before you ask, no I do not know my Bg numbers as I do not have a meter - I do have an appointment with the doc on Thursday and hope to gain his support to get one. Unfortunately I cannot afford to buy my own with the cost of test strips/lancets, so unless I have the doc's support I am "stuffed" in that direction.

But I just wondered if any of you had experience with relatively high carb at night and symphtomatic in the morning??

Or do you think my Carb intake is too low my daily doings/exercise?

Thanks
Alice

Hi Alice,

One thought that occurred to me is that wine can have a dehydrating affect and leave you with a dry mouth overnight. Although you are doing the right thing with your carb reduction, I am sure you can see the problem of trying to manage your diabetes without having a clue what your blood sugar level is. Having no meter is a bit like driving a car with no speedo in a speed restriction area!

I didn't have wine be the nights before, waking up with the re-occuring dry mouth, so doubt that will be the cause, as I only had wine last night.

Not having a meter is of course a problem, but as I said, unless I can get one and the test strips etc via my doctor, I just cannot afford it. Simple as that.

Furthermore, weighing myself this morning I have put on 1 lbs in the last 4 days, despite the low carb and cals!! Go figure - might as well forget all about it and just eat, at that is how I feel.

Thanks
Alice

Hi Alice

I'm a dietitian and a diabetic myself and although the reduced carb approach isn't for everyone, I would urge you to try and stick with it a bit longer as 3 weeks really isn't long enough for you to get a good idea of whether it works for you. A weight gain when you've been trying hard can be so frustrating but we all get small fluctuations for a variety of reasons and it's the general trend over a period of weeks that really counts. I can't give you personalised advice but if you could give me an idea of what a typical day's food and drink intake is for you (inlcuding water), then I will be happy to give some general comments which may be of help to you.

Many of us on this forum have gone through similar frustrations and felt like giving it all up and falling face down in a vat of jaffa cakes! Especially in the early days. But please do try and keep your chin up, make use of the experience on this forum and work with your diabetes care team and hopefully things will start to improve and you'll feel better. Do press your doctor or diabetic nurse for a meter though - if your doctor is reluctant to give you one, perhaps you could ask to have the loan of one for say 3 months to help you assess how different foods affect your blood sugar. It's not ideal but it will at least give you something to work with.

HI Alice,
I suffer the same dry mouth as you! My Gp says that it is to do with the fact that summer is on it's way! The heat during the night is drying the nouth and lips out!
this is the words i got told! She says not to worry so much about it! As this is normal!
It depends how hot you get when you are asleep! I find once i am in bed no matter how cold i am else where i burn up the minute i am in bed! This is the reason behind the heat etc.

If you tend to breathe through your mouth when asleep, and/or snore, this can dry your mouth and cause thirst too.

Thanks MrsHugWash - your input is very mucha appreciated. My DN is away and the lady I saw from another surgery was great - all pro low carb and giving me a meter etc BUT she can only do so with my Docs say so, as she does not want to go against Surgery guidelines. I can understand, but hope that it is a good sign for my doc's appointment on Thursday. We shall see.

Thanks Alice, I'll have a look at that tonight and come back to you with some feedback tomorrow. Are you happy for me to post on the forum, or would you prefer me to PM you?

Thanks ever so!! Would you PM me in the first instance, please and I can then share on the forum if and as I feel appropriate - others have no doubt read the post and my "diet sheet" and some of your comments could perhaps be useful in context, but I would just like to review in private first.

Thanks
Alice
