Hi everyone,
I am type 2 diabetic and over recent weeks have really struggled to eat sensibly, about to go for annual review - so fasting blood test to do in approx 2 weeks time, then 2 weeks later doctors appointment. Urine test as well as fasting test and 2nd urine test when attending doctors appointment.
I think that I need to go back to basics and set up a book to record everything I am doing, I do have a testing kit which I purchased and I purchase the strips etc as well - in fact I have just purchased new battery for it as it suddenly stopped working - will buy another battery to keep in stock as it felt awful not to be able to test at all.
I know from trying that low carb is the way forward but I really struggle to maintain low carb - I have yet to get beyond the craving for carbs, bread especially and have not found any alternative that I am happy with.

It is a year since I was first diagnosed and I perhaps stupidly felt a year down the line that I would have managed to find a way to manage the situation - instead I seem to be in total denial - I have lost over 2 stone in weight - a real struggle - but I do not feel any better for it (yes I was informed I would feel so much better if I lost weight) - I do have a lot going on in my life and I am sure that is having an impact on by bg levels as I am only just keeping them down in single figures as a first test in the morning - from there it goes into double figures and remains there for the rest of the day.

I feel a failure - you all seem to do so well, I have yet to reach a reading of 5 and wonder if I will ever reach that magic number...

I do eat breakfast but really struggle as it is a meal I never used to eat at all, I need to find a breakfast that I can take to work with me as I cannot eat as soon as I get up and usually eat something when I get to work - so any suggestions would be good.

Thank you

Hi, you sound like you know exactly what you need to do, it's just putting it into practise again. Have a look on the low carb section of the forum for 'what have you eaten today' there is endless ideas of what you could eat, don't think you have to have a 'breakfast item' for breakfast, most don't :)

You're no failure, it's not a test, it's more like a string of challenges that you overcome bit by bit.

Before meals 4 to 7 mmol/L is the target, 90 minutes after a meal, under 8.5 mmol/L is the target, so if you're under 7 before and 8.5, 90 minutes after, you're doing well. My analogy is that it's like balancing plates on sticks.

Well done on losing 2 stone, you're obviously doing something right. You may not notice the difference but your body does, everything from joints to organs, they just don't keep reminding you.

I think we can all sympathise with denial, it's a certainly a challenge, but a 2 stone loss is brilliant, so on the basis you have achieved that then I don't think you are in denial.

Going low carb also isn't easy, it's only a stroll into a supermarket to see the sheer volume of carbs there are available. I buy fresh food so avoid packaged and processed, when I cook from fresh I know what's in it.

How about buying a new cook book, try Paleo for ideas, or just google Paleo. Sometimes we need to be tempted by food that looks great for ideas, there are so many good recipes for low carb foods without directly looking for low carb options, the Italians cook really tasty food (if you avoid the pasta and pizza !)

You are moving in the right direction so well done on your achievement so far ;)

srobertson06-
That's exactly how I am.
And every time I eat anything I get sleepy and if I'm sitting I do drop off and usually drop or spill my coffee.
2 hrs and a nap after a ham sandwich yesterday sugars were 16.9.
Chicken last night and 13.9 this morning.
I'm so tired all the time.
Fed up with diabetes now!
Best wishes maddy.
Ps.
Mrsass. Thank you for advice. X

We've all been on that boatrip down the Nile. Some keep returning to it many times. I have had over 10 years practice at it. But you know that, and have shown here that you want to take action to change this. Well done!

Low carb has really helped me and I fell somewhat reluctantly into its clutches 6 months ago. Now my whole family is on it, and some of the meals we make are better that the ones LC replaces.

Bread is a difficult habit to break. I managed to wean my family onto one of the multiseeded batch loaves, and we use it regularly now. I found a breakfast of 2 slices in the morning set me up for most of the day, and gradually reduced my snack habit. Now I have cut to 1 slice a day because it was stopping me going into keto mode on my diet.

Another thing I do now is use Lidl high protein rolls, which are low carb. Took a little bit of getting used to but now I use them instead of potato in my evening meal (family has pots as ususal, Dad has his special.) I could mention the bread I miss, but then I would get people swearing at me for making them drool, so I won't. But I tried it the other day, and one slice was a disaster for me. (up 5 mmol/L spike that lasted most of the day).

Others find a linseed loaf does for them, and there are plenty of recipes for LC bread that others have tried with success. it is certainly one of the carby foods most of us find we have to avoid

Sorry sent before I had replied, thank you all for your replies, it has made me feel better than I was first thing. I am also feeling more positive about being able to get back to low carb.
