Hoping my new ketone meter will have been delivered to work while I was out yesterday. In the meantime my first full week of full on carnivore (haven’t eaten much veg for a while but have always ended up adding lots of nuts/ sweeteners through diet drinks) has seen my ketones shoot up. They were 0.8 this time last week. (Didn’t change the time when the clocks went forward so not quite as silly o’clock as it looks).

Hi @Goonergal I'm not clear on ketones at all. What does your reading tell you. I tested mine once and it was 0.6. The leaflet said I was in ketosis but I didn't look into it any more! Looking forward to learning more from you.
That's very interesting. My home tests have been 0.6. You are very high! Does it mean you aren't eating enough! Are you happy at that level? I'm just trying to get my head around ketosis. Going to measure mine again soon. Just out of curiosity.Hi @Debandez
That reading of 4.5 tells me that I’m in deep ketosis - knew it anyway by the metallic taste in mouth that was really strong.
Anything from about 0.5 means you’re in ketosis but the ideal range for fat burning/ weight loss is between 1.5 and 3.
There’s a good explanation on the Diet Doctor website which I’ve cut and pasted below.
“Blood ketones are best measured on a fasted stomach in the morning (before breakfast, that is). Here are a few pointers on how to interpret the result:
- Below 0.5 mmol/L is not considered “ketosis”. At this level, you’re far away from maximum fat-burning.
- Between 0.5-1.5 mmol/L is light nutritional ketosis. You’ll be getting a good effect on your weight, but not optimal.
- Around 1.5 – 3 mmol/L is what’s called optimal ketosis and is recommended for maximum weight loss.
- Values of over 3 mmol/L aren’t neccessary. That is, they will achieve neither better nor worse results than being at the 1.5-3 level. Higher values can also sometimes mean that you’re not getting enough food. For type 1 diabetics, it can be caused by a severe lack of insulin, see below.”
That's very integrating. My home tests have been 0.6. You are very high! Does it mean you aren't eating enough! Are you happy at that level? I'm just trying to get my head around ketosis. Going to measure mine again soon. Just out of curiosity.
You know your body so well. I feel I have a lot to learn. Don't think I could go carnivore as I do love a bit of variety. And I love veg. But I will see what my next HbA1c is and take it from there!4.5 is a bit high - don’t normally get there unless fasting. Was a bit hungry on Thursday so ate more. By yesterday afternoon had come down into the 2s, which is probably a better place to be. I find that the fewer carbs I eat the easier it is to judge whether I’m really hungry or just feeling like picking on something.
