You say you were diet controlled for 10 years what were you eating then and what are you eating now ?

There are women here who were thought to have GD but actually had a slow-developing form of Type 1 tagging @Diakat

Can I ask if you're losing weight? Have you seen a consultant? Your sugars shoukdnt be that high. I can't see the point in monitoring you if nothing's done.

I'd be pushing for some expert input.

Ask your gp for a consultant appointment as soon as possible.

Well, yes. If your blood sugar is over about 11, you will have glucose in your urine. What method do you have for monitoring your ketones? Is it just a urine ketone test strip or do you have access to blood ketone test strips? What kind of level of ketones are you seeing when you are testing? Are you doing any kind of low carb diet that might be causing ketosis?

Are you having the bicarbonate levels in your blood tested for some other condition? How aware they showing change? Low bicarbonate levels can be caused by diabetic ketoacidosis.

With high blood sugars and ketones present you should be alive to the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis. Any symptoms of DKA should be treated as an emergency. So a 999 call or an A&E visit.

You should push for specialist input to have your treatment escalated. Clearly 1 metformin tablet a day isn't doing anything to control your blood sugars. So adjustments to your medication are required.

It is fairly unusual for type 2s to be ketonic due to high blood sugar. So with that in mind, it is worth ruling out a misdiagnosis as type 2 when you are in fact type 1 with a c-peptide and GAD test.

A referral to a consultant endocrinologist will get those tests pretty easily and the required medication review.

If it was me, I'd phone and ask what was happening and what the plan was.

High sugars will be making you feel rough and can cause damage long term.

It's your health - ask for the answers you need. Be polite, but be firm.
