hey guys :)

i know many of you are aware that last week i was in hospital with serious dka and normal/low blood sugars... The hospital still unsure what caused this...

since being released ive been making sure i drink plenty and eat supper and my sugars have remained almost perfect however i am still waking up everyday with ketones anywhere between 0.3 and 0.8... Last night my sugars went to a massive 9.5 (steroid injection) and i had ketones of 1.2 and was feeling rubbish, 10mins ago i was 7.5 with ketones of 1.0.

This is really frustrating me as i have no idea why and neither does my dsn :(

Could this be due to the pregnancy? Your body does strange things when pregnant and sometimes flushes out ketones. It is a bit odd though if youre sugars are fine and you're eating and drinking plenty? Are they worried? Have you been vomitting?

Did the hospital tests confirm DKA (specifically, blood pH)? If not, are you eating low carb? Otherwise I can't think of anything right now.

hi

here is a suggestion

try using different monitors with the same blood sample i.e different makes and models will give different readings but on occasion can give vastly different readings. no doubt you have been offered a pump with a monitor for specific use with it possibly a roche model? Use the blood monitor for your pump first then with the same drop of blood (you may have to squeeze the finger twice) get another sample on a bayer (example only any make will do) and see what difference there is between readings i have attempted this and found monitors to be almost 20% innacurate meaning instead of having sugars of 7.5 you may actually have a true reading of 9.0 or even 6.0.

of course you may find regardless of what monitor you use you get the same reading - if so GOOD it means your readings between different technology are being read accurately if however you find like me they differ quite substantially then take a middle ground approach and think if one read 7.5 but the other read 9.0 then realisticly you may be more accurately 8.2.

now because you are finding that your experiencing ketones even with perfect suagr readings ( in my book thats anything between 5 and 8 purely for comfort) then it could be poor readings of your blood on your existing monitor. my advice is simply try some different monitors and see the difference when applying the same drop of blood to two different devices.

this may then show that your sugars may actually be a little higher than actually being displayed on your monitor hence why ketones are still present even though your sugars appear to be in good health.

if you have already tried this i appologise for wasting your time but hope that you get well real soon and things return to normal i gather from other threads youve had a real tough couple of weeks.

as always with anything i post on here always discuss any ideas or suggestions with your specialist before changing any dosages or medication or routines.

best wishes

jon

When I was hospitalised, finally, and when they finally got round to checking my bloods (only after my dsn went mad at them) my condition was serious... ph and bicarb levels were scary... and im not a low carb person, carbs work for me so im not planning on changing :D

I'd not tried different meters... think i may do though, i like to keep my sugars between 5 and 7, when i hit 8 i start feeling icky :)
Thanks for the suggestion :)

I too seem to have ketones in my pee regardless of diet, I was initially put on Insulin for this reason, It's reduced my ketone levels but not completely.

I now just don't bother testing, I'm putting on weight (which is intentional), my kidney function has came back as normal, no other complications, so I've left it at that.

I use Ketosticks to measure, I have on some occasions, but not many, tested negative for ketones. So I think the Ketosticks themselves are fine.

Strange and not really sure why you'd have ketones, as your DSN doesn't know the answer you could ask your diabetes consultant for a explanation.

Thankfully I never seem to register ketones even when I'm not well, never seems to move from negative :o

I'm used to low level ketones on a morning, they just seem to be creeping up... my consultant is as confused as the rest of us are... its got to be pregnancy related but they have not come across it before like this. ive gone from testing 10 x a day to 20+... my gp is NOT happy  oh well only 4 more sleeps to go :D

Hi Dragonflye

Hope that you give birth soon........... Cant understand why you have been allowed home, especially with the problems that youve got. Doesn't make sense to me ????......especially with the trouble you had getting an ambulance to call............

They felt it best for me to go home, having 2 kids already was very stressful when you cant see them much and it was getting my blood pressure up :) I live so close to the maternity unit, ive got to give em a call anytime im worried... they apparently have my name on a board in the labour ward so if i call they gotta get me in immediately lol if my ketones go above 1.5 i gotta go straight back in too but lucky highest they have got is 1.2 since the disaster last week :)

I would like to note that the maternity unit is amazing, its just the rest of the hospital thats bad, and im hoping just 1 of the ambulance call takers in which complaint proceedings have already begun :)

my section is booked for thursday morning and im absolutely petrified :) my daughter keeps reminding me 4 more sleeps lol the midwives are horrified i may not have a birth partner this time (cant get childcare for my 4yr old) so they are plotting a plan to smuggle her into the recovery room once ive had the section :D
