Need some advice please, my sugars are generally high, not able to get them under control but just checked my keystones because my mouth is so dry and my keytones are at 7.9 I don't feel particularly poorly, abit of a headache and feel alittle like I have a hangover, should I go to hospital or stick it out at home with lots of fluid??? Help please!

First you can retest. I assume you're using a blood ketone meter, in which case 7.9 is very high and you should call for an ambulance or get someone to take you to the hospital immediately. If you have to wait for the ambulance, drinking water may help a little, but it's not going to resolve the problem.

What are your current blood sugars? If high, and combined with your ketones and your hangover symptoms, I would definitely call an ambulance or ring 111 and let them call one.. Meanwhile, keep drinking and drinking.

Hi @Mellie_P

Please look at this - especially the bottom of the page where it discusses results.

Is it safe to assume that your blood glucose is also high at the moment?

Yes using keystone machine, had 6 units after last reading just checked again and they are down to 4.9, doin just ride it out out with water and keep testing?? Feel a little achey when I stand up. Not sure what to do

No, you need to go to the hospital when they're that high. It's still much, much too high, and the acidity it's causing in your blood can do serious damage.

The OP refers to a "ketone machine" something I've never heard of. Is that a meter like a glucometer? I'm only familiar with the old urine dipsticks which light up when there are ketones in the urine. I'm guessing the OP was manifesting signs of DKA which should be treated in a hospital of course, using IV insulin infusion usually.

Yes it's similar they test the presence and amount of ketones in the blood with a test strip - you can get meters which will test both blood glucose and ketones (with separate strips).
