Hi I had covid last week got through it ok, tested negative.

But Tuesday woke up 5am with extreme nausea felt weak.
Then this morning 5am same started vomiting a lot, horrific.

Both days by 9am felt ok again eating etc.

Tested my blood it already went up to 15 just before covid.

Was same but was flashing ketones.

Spoke to doctor who wanted to send me to A and E!
I didn’t even know what ketones were.

Then he called back explaining ketones would these due to vomiting and as long as I do t get worse I don’t have to go.

I’m scared to go to sleep in case I wake up like that nausea or vomiting again.

I had quite a bit of pasta round 3 then not much except crisps before bed.
All naughty I know.

Any advice on reducing ketones pls it’s been very scary.
Doc told me to rest up

Hi, as I understand it, our bodies use keytones for fuel when it has no choice, ie. we starve it of other fuel, in your case vomitting, these are ok as long as they dont go too high coupled with high blood sugar, without testing equipment you wont know how high they are, you can buy the meter and keytone strips or wee strips on amazon (wee strips are rubbish imho) but will take a while to arrive and you want to know now, the only way is to visit A&E, you certainly do not need anyones permission to do this! it is very unlikely that you do in fact have a condition called ketoacidosis as this is caused by a lack of insulin and as a type 2 you probly have plenty but I have read on here folks with type 2 having it so its by no means certain.

My uneducated advice would be to visit A&E because it is the default response, you will probly be fine but for the sake of a boring sit in a germ infested room, you have nothing to lose and it could be important, I hope you get some help or better soon.

Emphasis on UNeducated.

Your glucose meter flashes ketones when you're above 15 to alert you you should test for them, not because it has detected ketones.
If you want to test for ketones you'll need a separate meter or urine test strips.

So until you test for them you won't know if you're having ketones.

Oh really Thank you , it’s all confusing. That is reassuring
Might not be that I actually have them.
Nothing is simple is it in diabetes.

And yes maybe I will get checked although terrified of ending up in hospital

Still no clue what causing the vomiting

Keep well hydrated, you will find this very difficult if you are vomiting. You will also tend to become dehydrated if you have high blood glucose as your body tries to pee it away. You will need to keep in touch with your doctor/medical support. They will be able to rehydrate you with a saline drip at the hospital if that becomes necessary.

Hi, hope you're feeling better. I guess that one thing your doctor was concerned about might have been diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) where you can have high blood sugar, presence of high levels of ketones, vomiting etc. It can be extremely serious and is sometimes an indication of undiagnosed Type 1 diabetes. I understand you're T2, but if the vomiting and high levels continue I would definitely talk to a doctor about it.

DKA is not the same thing as normal dietary ketosis - I'm usually in ketosis which just means I'm using body fat for energy.
