Hello,
If being in Ketosis means the body is burning fat, the very fat that is surrounding the vital organs surely this must be a good thing? How else can you get rid of the fat around your organs? Less calories, more exercise? NO carbs?

I would love to know if any up to date research or info is available because I am yet to hear a reason why its bad to be in Ketosis.

I SHOULD POINT OUT THAT I AM TALKING ABOUT SOMEONE MANAGING BY DIET ALONE, SO MEDS WOULD NOT BE AFFECTED.

MAYBE when we get that sweet taste in our mouths its actually an indicator from our bodies saying "well done, you are burning the fat away and helping your organs do their job"
Thanks

You do not need to be in ketosis to lose weight you just need to eat fewer calories.

Ketosis is not a normal state for a person to be in and I am not aware of any long term studies into it, hardly surprising really as so few people will ever find themselves in ketosis.

Ketosis has been studied in kids with epilepsy, it can reduce or even stop the fits.

It's quite likely that on some traditional diets such as the peoples living in the Arctic [Inuit or Sami], Ketosis is the normal condition. It's not harmful if not combined with high blood glucose. witrh normal and low blood glucose, it's not harmful, probably just a sign that fats are being oxydised. The brain can use ketones for fuel!
And Sid, as I've said before, Calories in vs Calories out as in the 0th law of thermodynamics doesn't apply to enzyme moderated closed systems like animals,[ you would have to include the immediate environment in your calculation] so unless you think we work like an internal combustion engine, check out the second law. We DO increase entropy! AND ketones are metabolites of fats. Probably always present when losing weight.

PS they have now found conditions other than epilepsy which benefit from Ketogenic diets. I can't remember which at the moment, but I think some cancers also respond. You can Google " Very Low Carbohydrate Ketogenic diets". Make sure you get to a site with peer reviewed material otherwise you'll find any number of crackpots
