Hi I. Have been a diabetic for 25yrs and for the last year I have been on a pump Unfortunately I got keystones 3weeks ago because my cannular was not in properly so had been without insulin for several hours.I became very ill very quickly vomiting etc The keystones were at 3.9
I eventually managed to control everything but was told by several people that I should have presented myself at A&E Therefore when I got keystones this morning reading 4 I tried to speak to the on call specialist for over one hour unsuccessfully I treated myself with more insulin and drank lots of water while I decided to go to hospital. On the way to the hospital I got through to someone who said that she could talk me through things and that I didn't need to go to hospital. She advised me to do tests every hour and said she would get the diabetic nurse to call me which she has twice Unfortunately after my keytones reduced over time they have increased again Ugh.Is this usual Most of my family feel I was better off on the pen as I never had keytones

If keytones over are 3 you should go to A&E.

Do you think there might be a malfunction with your pump or is it just a cannula problem?

The problem does seem to be my cannular. It is a real shame that the manufacturers have not been able to invent something yet to let you know that the cannular is not in properly After a full day of testing my bloods and keytones things seem to be okay now. However I am exhausted

I've never used a pump so can't be much help. Hopefully one of the pumpers here can offer some advice.

Have you tried using the steel cannulas? I think they're called Rapid-D for the Accu-chek pumps and for my daughter's Animas pump they're called Contact-Detach. Our concern before pumping was the risk of teflon cannulas kinking and causing problems which is why our DSN suggested the steel cannula as it's almost impossible for it to kink. The sticky adhesive holds the steel cannula in place very well. I'm not sure what you mean by the cannula not being in properly, perhaps you can explain further or do you mean there's been a problem like kinking when it's gone in without you being aware?
