I have been 'stage 1' nephraphy for a few years (and have neuropathy in my feet too) and my blood pressure has to be controlled, but I would like to know exactly what is 'stage 1'? how soon can this develop to stage 2 and beyond? what could happen? everything seems to have worsened, though I have halved my diabetic meds in the past year and stopped glicazide and pioglitazone, and dropped metformin by two thirds, have to lose weight and stop being so tired and depressed however!

2x500 metformin, 1x150 simvastatin, 1x2.5 bendroflumethiazide, 1x150 irbesartan,1x1.25bisoprolol,1x60 duloxetine, 1x20mg furosomide,
2x100 tramadol, 2x450 pregabalin(lyrica)
BMI 30.5, hba1c 5.1,chol 5.9,bpnormal,angina, neuropathy,nephratic stage 1,arthritis,

"If diagnosed early, neuropathy may be reversible, or as least controllable. There are 3 proposed stages of neuropathy:

1. Functional neuropathy: This stage is without pathology but with biochemical alteration in nerve function. It is reversible.
2. Structural neuropathy: This stage involves the loss of structural change in nerve fibers. It may be reversible.
3. Nerve death: There is critical decrease in nerve fiber density and neuronal death in this stage. It is irreversible."

This articleexplains chronic kidney disease (CKD.)

I've been stage 2 (GFR in the 60s) for several years, with no symptoms or indication of disease. My Dr is simply monitoring the creatinine/GFR. Changing from the DUK diet to reduced carb has not affected the numbers.

You need to ask about your GFR (see the link ^) which is a measure of kidney performance.

My friend was increasingly unwell, & after tests over many months was suddenly told he would have to attend hospital for dialysis - without being told along the way that he had kidney disease. I asked him to ask his Dr for his GFR readings & it was down to 16. He'd been in the 20s for several years. He got advice on diet (fresh foods & VERY low salt (his wife was very free with the salt.) He now feels well after a few months, & his GFR is above 60.

I suggest you ask your Dr about your GFR history, & about diet. I hope a CKD diet is compatible with a reduced carb diabetes diet.
