kidney scan ?

My appointment went well and apparently my levels , cholesterol , BP and liver are good.
I mentioned the problem that won't go away though and my gp said he was going to write to my hospital for clarification about my ECG etc and mentioned I probably have a kidney problem (he said a long word that I wish I remembered , think it was g or k) and would need further tests like blood and kidney scans. He also said the word "cardio" too but not sure if it was myo and the person with me wasn't paying attention as usual.

Has anyone else had a kidney scan?

Yes I did, but around 1984 and only the one time, certainly within a couple of years of diagnosis. Had to fast for 12 hours to ensure nothing would block the scan, then was injected (intravenous) with dye and various xrays taken. Seemed somewhat pointless to me at the time, now is when the results might be a bit more interesting...!

I'm betting that long word you heard is "glomerular" which refers to the bits of the microvascular system in your kidneys which actually do the filtering.

Injected?! Wow , I was 5 in 1984 and think I had my tonsils out.
I'm being referred to my Renal unit and feel excited (finally an answer I have symptoms of something so it's a tad exciting , maybe a cure ) and nervous (I cope bad with being naked) but Diabetes is a rollercoaster for me.
Thanks for telling me it was probably glomerulus , it was slightly longer but i'm in the right area now. I suffer with anxiety problems but if I relax I come across as knowledgeable and doctors speak to me like I know stuff. Weird as i'm thick.

I had a kidney scan a couple of days after diagnosis. They did an ultrasound..just like the type women have when they are pregnant.
I also have a vague memory that I had some intravenous dye but looking on the internet that seems as if it was for the CT scan which I had on the same morning, which apparently can also look at the kidneys but other areas also.
Sorry I'm a bit vague but they scanned everything that day and I didn't understand half of what was going on as I was still rather shell shocked at being in hospital and trying to deal with things in French.

If you are still on Metformin please check with the hospital whether you need to stop taking the metformin before the scan. If they need to inject a dye for the scan you may need to do this as the metformin can react with the dye.

Diabetes can damage kidneys, so they need to check. I hope you are all clear

Hana - is it true that soon after diagnosis? If so do you know what the presentation is? It might help explain why some have prompt scans at such an early stage! :?:

Can someone answer a question for me? It's now been over a month since I visited my GP and I don't want to appear rude by calling my clinic but does it usually take this long ? I was ordered an ECG (still not sure why) and seen within a week but it was a hospital consultant so maybe they are more trustworthy.
I wish I was rich enough to go private but i'd need a spare £200k

I had a few kidney stones removed 2 or 3 years ago; one by zapping the other by operation.

Ironically, it was a trip to A&E to have my grumbling left kidney looked at which lead to my (eventual) T2 diagnosis.

They did a quick scan of my kidney with a mobile machine and confirmed I have another stone in my left kidney; I am just awaiting an ultrascan appointment for a more detailed analysis. Which reminds me, that was almost 3 weeks ago, so I'd better give them a chase by phone today.

From what I've read and learn't from this forum, diabetes and kidney problems seem to go hand in hand, especially if your blood sugar has been high for a prolonged period without detection which I suspect is the case for the majority of T2 sufferers.

Good luck with your scan , i've read about how painful kidney stones are so hope you feel better now.

I have felt pressure to lower it to 5% or less.

While it may be a good thing to attain the lowest numbers that you can, NO one can put pressure on you to do anything you do not want to. It is your diabetes.
