Type of diabetes
Type 1
Hi, I've been type 1 for 24 years with no complications, I'm starting to feel anxious about things going wrong, I've got a urine infection for first time ever and pain in the kidney area,I've convinced myself its the start of kidney disease, is anyone else the same or has anyone got kidney trouble and how did it start,I'm 52.

Try not to worry, once the antibiotics kick and get to work the pain will soon ease I'm sure.

Don't forget we get our kidneys checked when we have our annual diabetes check, so any changes in the function of your kidneys would show up in the results and you'd be told about it by your Dr/Consultant.

Hope your feeling better soon.

If it's the first ever UTI expereince it might just be a bit of a shocker to find out how painful a simple standard non-diabetic UTI can be! They aren't very nice. I can understand why the discomfort is making you anxious about your kidneys but it is most likely that the pain there is just as a result of the infection.

Have you seen your GP and taken in a urine sample so they can give you the right antibiotics to fight the infection - if you are in pain don't be tempted to try and fight it off with cranberry juice, make sure you see a GP and get treated.

If you are up to date with all your diabetic screening and your blood results haven't flagged up any kidney issues there's unlikely to be anything to worry about. But you could mention your concerns to your GP - hopefully they could review the historic results and give you some reassurance.

Feel better.

Thank you I have been to doc's and got some antibiotics, nearly finished them but still got pain, I will make appointment next week.
