Knee wound not healing

Four weeks ago I had a bad fall from my bike and scraped my knee. The peripheral scrape has healed OK but there was a gouge in the middle that has not healed.

It was quite deep , I initially had to cut away dead skin and have been dressing with antiseptic cream since, It is slowly ‘filling out’ but is still wet it scabs over from time to time but never ‘dries out’.

Sorry for the messy details. But anyway, how long should I leave this before I seek help? Does anyone have any home remedies that might help it heal?

Everything I’ve read says that a wound like that should heal in 2 weeks but I imagine my diabetes is why it’s taking longer.

When diagnosed last year I imagined that I’d caught it early enough to avoid any related damage but apparently not.

You may be best off seeking help, but just as a remedy for that kind of cut, I have found filling the wound with vaseline then keeping it covered makes you heal more quickly. It sounds counter-intuitive because I'd always thought you should let the air get to a cut, but given that your knee joint moves and the scab never sets, it might be worth a try. I learned about the vaseline trick as a way to avoid scars after a facial operation, but I've used it on various scrapes since and it has worked quite well for me.

I found that the plasters sold for blisters work quite well. The gel type with squishy padding. It's a bit counter intuitive because we're usually told to leave wounds open, but if it's not drying out anyway, keeping it clean is important.

Personally, I think your knee should be checked. Obviously, I have no way of know what is, or isn't going on in your knee, but the sort of fall you have had, it's quite possible you have a foreign body in the wound. if it isn't drying out, you could also have a lowish grade infection in there.

I could go on, but you get the drift.
