When I was little, we used to play 'knock a door run' , where you knock on someones door then run off before they answer. Nowadays its known as 'parcel force'.

So True Pilgrim

In the village where I used to live as a little girl the local lads
often did this .

The local lads had one better trick - to tie a piece of invisible nylon sewing thread to a door knocker
then unravel yards of the thread from the bobbin to their nearest hiding place.

Yank and pulling on the thread making the knocker work - they would watch the house owner answer
door baffled - go inside - then the little lads would do it all over again and again !!!

Driving the poor houseowner daft of keep answering the door ' until ' they discovered the thread.

At this point the giggling watching lads would run away from their hiding place ...

If they ever got caught they were taken home by the 'ear' to their parents by the annoyed
house owner.

Games and funtimes of days gone by - were much simpler and more actively entertaining too .
All done on a shoestring using the simplest of things .

Anna.

One just a little bit up on that. When kids we would attach the cotton, ( not thread because that could be dangerous ), to as many door knockers as the cotton would reach, then, each time a door opened another knocker was activated. Note:I did live in a cul de sac and traffic was very few and far between in those days.....1940's. it didn't take long before we were caught though and grounded during the dark evenings.

There seem to always be an old man living on the street and rumours were he had a pitchfork and hated children, scary times.
