Know your rights!

on a slightly different note ther are also alot of diabetics who have ignored any advice at all! It is quite amazing really but they ignore everything , dont take their medicationa eat absoulte rubbish and expect the HP to sort them out when things go wrong.

If you look after yourself it hard to imagine people could be so reckless with their health!

Thanks for that ,Ally.Yes you are right.I know a lot of diabetics, mostly in the over 60 bracket who think that because they are on medication that the medication does the work and they do not have to! They eat what they have always eaten, "but it's OK the tablets keep me OK "!!Then they can't understand why they have problems.

sue - its not even an age thing i have quite a number of younger clients and I mean under 40 who just don't give a ****. I could give a you a huge list! Its very sad really. I can even think of an entire family of diabetics - when the gp sent the original ref to me he quoted - they use 2 sacks of potatoes a week - do you think you could get them down to one! For me is in an up hill battle with some people. One of the family comes to see me for a few weeks and then says she will change and then disappears for a few months then comes back . I cant give up on them but the doctors have !

Ally, are you telling us that you have a GP that understands the risks of potato consumption in a diabetic!! Marvellous.

It's everyones prerogative to ignore advice. All of us do it here.

Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, street drugs, obesity, etc.
We all know that these things can potentially kill but we still do them. I knew that having a BMI of 34, a positive test for thyroid peroxidase antibodies and a father with T2 would almost certainly mean I'd get T2 but did I do anything about it? No, not until I was diagnosed.

That's the whole point of HCP advice, it's advice.

ha ha - u do not seem very supportive towards HP I feel

Yesterday I did a session on a radio station , in my capcity as a sports dietitian and Nicole Cooke winning a gold -before me a gp was talking about IBS and I quote he said - i always refer my pts to a dietitian we doctors are pretty rubbish at talking about food!

I'm a keen road cyclist Ally, and I was jumping up and down as Nicole came over the line. She's an absolute tigress. Just wait till our riders get the the velodrome, I think they'll clean up this year.
On the other hand, our female hockey players were a little less impessive. They looked flabby, and one or two had proper bellies. I think they have potato issues too. Who's feeding them?

All the best,

fergus

hi fergus - she was supurb!

To be fair the tv adds a stone and their clothe are skin tight!!

I think the cyclists will do well - they have had enough money thrown at them !

Ally, I'm very supportive of HCP's. I am one and have been for 20 years. I offer advice to my clients based on the evidence and then support them in whatever path they choose, even if it means I am in direct conflict with my employers and professional body. It's my job.

Fergus.
I was watching the gymnastics on Sunday and my first comment about the British team was how 'sturdy' they looked. My daughter said we were too used to seeing the pre-pubescent gymnast. All said, there's no way I'd have enough guts to do a somersault on a beam!

The TV wasn't as unkind to the Germans that our team was playing, Ally! They were slim, muscular and much more athletic. It would be interesting to compare their diets.

All the best,

actually the boxer was seen by someone who wasnt a Dietitian - I used to work for the EIS and they have employed cheaper versions!

They would all be eating carbs and protein - funny the welsh girl was fit! Hockey has been one of the sports i work with down here - maily with development squads tho.

what do you guys think about the recommendation there about transferring patients to insulin, looks a bit rubbish there to me, type 2's have to start once a day NPH and then go on to the evil mixed insulin.

I don't know but I think that 3 months could be a long time for someone who have very highly elevated blood sugars.

Well for my money as a T2 insulin is the last resort and do what ever you can do to control it other ways first. Read my thank you thread.
