I have been on Lantus and Aspart for a couple of years now, and struggle with my weight. Orlistat got a couple of stone off, but now I have stopped losing weight.

My GP seems to suggest that Byetta is not indicated if you have previously used insulin. Is this correct?

I am type 2 since 1997, Metformin is also taken (along with blood pressure meds).

Hi Richard, I've been on Byetta since Monday, I also take Lantus and until Monday Novorapid too. Likewise Metformin SR and other stuff.
So it must be possible :)

Hi Richard,

We have several contributors who have either switched or are in the process of switching from insulin to Byetta. In the US Byetta treatment (for type 2s) alongside insulin is quite common.

I am on Lantus and Metformin and have been taking Byetta for a month. The consultant gave it to me although it is not licensed for use with Insulin. My Gp is happy to continue because my sugars yhave come down significantly, I have lost a little weight, am no longer ravenous all the time, and the pain in my feet is much reduced. I have had a little nausea but not bad enough to be a uisance and have just gone onto the full 10unit dose after being on 5units for the first 30 days,. I was taking Apidra as well as Lantus before 3 times a day and this has stopped. The sugar levels are now mostly in the normal range instead of in the high teens . Go for it if you can get it I say.

I'm currently on Lantus and Novorapid. The consultant at the hospital clinic wanted me to change over to Byetta - until I found out that it wasn't liscensed for patients on insulin, so I refused to change.

Whether that's right or wrong or not, I don't know but I personally would rather be reassured that this is absolutely safe for me to use first and that's why I'll wait until it's licensed.
