Hi All,i have been on lantus for approx 4years.My hospital have lost my hospital records and only have temporary ones .I am fuming and have written to everyone phoned everyone and they still cannot be traced!!The other week at my appointment i phoned hospital before i went and was told they were there found but they werent it was only my temporary notes.I wouldnt mind but in all my 39years of having type 1 i have never ever missed an appoinment.Anyway i wanted to find out when i was put on lantus as i cant remember.Doctor at hospital said you will have to make an appointment with your local doctor because he will have every letter we send him from your hospital appointments.Anyway i wanted to ask if anyone has had any problems with lantus because doctor at hospital said the lantus is fine and does not cause any problems.Well i have been getting terrible aches when i bend down or kneel down and i try to get back up.My shoulders hurt when i open cupbourds or doors which are low down.i have developed small little round lumps on my fingers and doctor said this was the starting of arthritis!!!I was wondering if anyone else has any problems ike this.Could this be the lantus causing this? :?: :?:

Am not sure to be honest sugarybibs. Ive heard lantus anecdotally implicated in arm rashes/stinging/weight gain but not the aches and pains you describe

I do believe that there is a increased risk of arthritis with diabetes (cant remember where I read the article but I believe its something like more than 50% of diabetics will get it-Centre for disease control I think).
Systemic Lupus causes all sorts of joint stuff and is autoimmune too but dont know if thats a long shot.

Also, i believe statins cause all sorts of aches and pains too

As for the losing your stuff - thats scandalous. I would ask your GP if it would be possible to collate all information he has on past a1c's etc for you at some point for you/endo.

I started Lantus in February and almost imediately I have been getting aches and pains in my shoulders and neck, it's not always there and it's only dull but it is there.

I am also low carbing and have been for 6 months yet since going onto Lantus I have gained 4 pounds in weight after losing nearly 2 stone. I have tried to change my diet since gaining to reduce protein and fat a bit but nothing so I am a little confused too. On the up side my average BS's are much better between 5.2 - 5.6 daily although I do have the dawn phenonmen problem which I cant resolve.

I am looking to swap to levimir to see what happens.

No personal experience but from many years of reading various forums and newsgroups, for many people Lantus is the best thing since sliced bread. Er, bad analogy but you know what I mean, it's head and shoulders above the likes of NPH or Mixturd

BUT

a significant minority of patients have problems specific to Lantus which often resolve from a change to Levemir or animal insulins.

Usually though this will show pretty much immediately on starting it.

After four years I'd be looking for a second opinion. Connective tissue problems, arthritis etc. are often associated with poorly controlled diabetes (glycated tissues), and with other autoimmune problems in Type 1s but there are a bunch of other possible factors too.

My bet is it's your Lantus, and I think you're already coming to that conclusion. I'm reeling a bit after reading your post; I spoke to a woman a couple of months ago called Sandra Den Braben, she also developed lumps in her hands. I'm just looking at the article now and I can't believe the similarity with what you're saying-you can read the article on the IDDT website in the New Year 2009 Newsletter on Page 7.
I contacted the IDDT when I became very ill with a host of side effects. I suffered joint pains, particularly shoulders and arms. I was referred to a Prof at Guys and diagnosed with Fibromyalgia! I didnt link it to Lantus until I'd been on it 4 and a half years last May. I feel so stupid that I didn't make the link before, and it still upsets me thinking about what I went through. I, like you, was fobbed off by doctors and told that Lantus was the best thing since sliced bread.
I have been on Pork insulin since last May, and have gone from being ill, exhausted and having no consistency in my blood sugar control, to having good control and I don't feel like a half-awake zombie, -and my aches and pains have gone. I contacted the Prof to tell him and he couldn't give a fig; he had put me on a dopamine agonist(which I didnt take, thank god) and he was involved in a study, I was just cannon fodder for him!
In case you cannot find the article, Sandra Den Braben has given me permission to give her phone number ( If you PM me I will give you information) She is keen to talk to patients having similar probs with Lantus.
You've already put 2 and 2 together, good for you, and you are not alone.
Also I havent been looking at the forum much over past few month; and have noticed recently how many people on analogue insulins are reporting problems, particularly with control. However, I am not surprised.
Best of luck

I have just swopped to levemir after 3 years on lantus.
I have had serious shoulder pain for the last 2 years, the worst thing with lantus was the waking up at night, between 8 to 10 times, this stopped when i switched.

I would advice anyone who has good reason to believe that they are suffering a side-effect of any analogue insulin to report it to the MHRA, this can be done on their website. whether it's physical complaints or lack of glucose control. It's so important that we all do this, so links are made, and doctors are made aware. Whether they telll us or not is another matter; thank god for the internet!
