Late night snack ideas?

Non diabetics who think they know better and people who keep asking me "are you allowed to eat that?"
Hiya all,

I wondered what other people found useful for getting rid of those munchies late at night without causing much disturbance to your sugar levels? I often suffer with the late night munchies and often get stuck for ideas. I try not to eat anything to heavy carb wise but its not always that easy ha ha.

Cheers, Kev

Thanks, I will take a look and get some ideas. I think I need to get quite a bit of information from you guys as I am a bit lost in many areas and find it hard to get answers from the doctors and speacialists I see. I'll post that in the general section though.

Sometimes just having a drink will quell the munchies, if you're not actually hungry. Try a cup of tea or one of those low sugar hot chocolate drinks. If youm are hungry, try keeping some cooked meats in the fridge. a slice of ham or a cooked sausage is good. slice of pastrami is my favourite, especially if sliced thin enough for transparency, and it's fairly low in fat as well as low carb. You've just reminded me I must buy some on my way back from my afternoon stroke club meeting

I think one of my favourite late night snacks is popcorn...but I try to keep myself away from the buttered kind, and if I need butter desperately, I use a low fat margarine. I enjoy the microwave popcorn, and if I don't eat too much of it, it takes care of those late night munchies. There's nothing worse then going to bed on a growling stomach, and it's not a good idea where your bg is concerned.

Enjoy your popcorn!

I don't think anything is advised as being off limits or 'not good' - it's more a case of everything in moderation.

I love munching raw carrots if I'm feeling peckish, they have a sweetness which is quite satisfying.

There's also a mousse-type thing that you can make with sugar-free jelly crystals and muller light yoghurt. I'll try and put up the recipe, but really it's just a case of checking how much the yoghurt weighs (I can't remember if it's grams or floz) and then instead of making the jelly with all hot water, you substitute in the yoghurt instead...... I'm not sure I explained that very well, ha!..... I think it's usually a pint of jelly, so where the instructions tell you to make it with water, you substitute in the weight of the yoghurt and then make up the remainder with the hot water.

Anyway, I usually use strawberry jelly crystals and vanilla yoghurt - it makes a wobbly pink mousse that looks pretty hideous but tastes good and is low in fat and CHO. :D
