latest hba1c result

Hi all
Type 2 taking metformin, gliclazide and trulicity.
I have been trying low carb to reduce bg numbers also to lose weight, just read results of hba1c online I have gone from 11.4 to 7.6 in 3 months, only lost a few lbs but I need to exercise more, I'm averaging 5000 steps daily, I see the diabetes nurse tomorrow to discuss the results and I'm looking forward to it for a change.:)

a very fine progress indeed , I am sure you´ll be able to get that even lower... just by going even lower in carbs... but really excellent to do more exercise .. it works well in lowering blood glucose emidiately and also more long term in lowering insuline resistance.. if one build muscles as well, it is possible for most to lower insuline resistance with around 30% by becomming optimally fit and getting in shape... which I think is a much overlooked way of helping diabetes type 2..

if one can not do a lot of endurance exercise , then resistance exercise where one build muscles is actually a much easier approach than most do believe... building muscle is usually done by repeating weight lifting / resistance maschines like 3 sets of 10-12 repetitions .. so usually one is not as exhausted from doing that as when doing lots of endurance exercises..

when it comes to building stronger and bigger arms that could actually be done in the sofa in front of ones telly... so no excuse ...

It's good that your GP surgery has online access to your results. I hope your appointment with the DN tomorrow goes well.

I know we are all different but maybe my experience will give you hope. I too found that I did not lose weight immediately - I have now lost 4 stone but it came off really erratically so no weight loss for 6 weeks and then 7 lbs in one week . Then 8 weeks no weight loss and 7lbs loss at the end. Even before the scales showed a difference I did however feel my shape was changing and bloods were getting into normal range. At the start I was eating a bit too much protein and now aim for 0.8 per kilo of the weight I want to be .. also I try to ensure I drink between 1.5 and 2 litres of fluids a day and a bit more if it is really hot.

I have a resistance band and exercise with that and it easier than an exercise bike if you have limited space but most of my exercise is gentle walks.

Firstly am I right to assume your GP has given you a BG meter and that you are testing often due to being on gliclazide? (The NICE rules says they should have, as there is a risk of BG getting too low.)

Try testing (and recording) your BG before you start eating a meal, one 1hr after the meal and 2hr after the meal along with a photo of the meal. You need to be aiming for meals that increase your BG by less then 2, otherwise see if you can remove more carbs from the meal the next time you have it. (Adding "good fat" to a meal can help you fill full, so avoid snacking etc.)

The gliclazide dose should be reduced by your GP when your BG becomes better control due to you doing "low carb". If you are told to eat more carbs due to low BG readings, ask for the gliclazide to be reduced instead, but you must eat about the same amount of carbs each time, otherwise it is very hard to get the gliclazide dose right.

As to losing weight, don't even try hard at present; by getting your BG under control with low carb, a slow reduction in gliclazide dose (when approved by GP and some exercise (ideally including resistance), your weight is most likely to take care of its self.
