There are such wonderful results from members who are educating themselves as to what works for them. The LCHF. Regime is very popular but I am at present on statins and although I really want to follow the LCHF diet can that and statins go together. I fully understand the diet and how it works but a bit concerned because of the medication.
Hope this names sense as a question,

Hi, as far as I am aware there is no reason why you can`t combine LCHF and statins. Quite a few of us though, myself included, doubt the wisdom or necessity of taking statins. Please don`t misunderstand me, I`m not saying that you are wrong to take them, just that quite a few of us have decided against them, you have to make up your own mind on that. Wishing you the best of luck whatever you decide.:).

I reversed my diabetes by following a low carb diet at the same time as taking statins. I have now stopped take statins as my numbers have come down ,also my legs no longer hurt for the first time in years

I thought the only dietary interaction was grapefruit, so i checked here, and saw several drug interactions, grapefruit and niacin supplements (which is Vit B3).

If you are concerned about the effect of LCHF on cholesterol levels, you should watch this video.

Thank you chri5. I think I will see how I actually feel taking the statins alongside the diet rather than cut them out at this early stage But hopefully it won't be too long before,I have sufficient weight loss to go and ask for a cholesterol test i guess we are so different in how our bodies react even when we are all doing the same thing -
that it has to be trial and error and it can certainly be a bit of a trial !!!!!

Also have a look at Dr Kendricks site.

Ooh. That sounds really, encouraging Southbeds. I changed from Simvastatin to Atorvastatin. Because of dreadful pain in my legs and that side of,it greatly improved as a result. However I now look forward to disposing of them altogether and you are proof of course that it can be done so thank you very much for your reply. I was only put on statins because of an eye problem and the doc wanted my levels to stay within limits he felt was advisable. I never knew whether they were that bad anyway. But without any change in lifestyle I became borderline diabetic and then because I'm afraid I gained a stone in weight I am now diagnosed type 2 . So now I have to to attend an eye screening clinic as well to check for diabetic.retinopothy so it's a vicious circle anyway it seems.

My hubby finally joined the lchf. Initially went for a lot more cream and butter and cheese. That was bad for both of us. I've always been lower carber, but was rarely eating enough fat or protein.
Anyhow with the extra "heavy" fat hubby's levels went high and he was put on 40g atoravastatin.
My levels although at the time I only got my total level also went in the wrong direction.

However, by going to avocado, olive oil dressings, nuts and feta cheese and one cafetiered coffee with single cream in daily etc both our levels have come down and hubby is off statins totally..

Thank you for your reply dnnelly dogs . I'm glad it worked out so well for you but it was as I feel trial and error. I have been reading all about the benefits of avocado before I read your post and I do like them so they were on my food list. I also love Greek salads so I'm happy. My partner always cooks with Olive Oil but his preferences won't be quite the same as mine now. But not a problem - he's just not diabetic. !!

To me when I have read about diets etc there is one only that hasn't as far as I can see had anything detrimental about it. Thats the mediterreanean diet...
I never realised until I came to this forum that I was naturally a lower carber for the vast majority of 50 years...I did need more fat though.. and the fat has improved my wellbeing as a whole....
There was also good info given to me here that I should look at the old mediteranean diet rather than later recipes etc that have been americanised...
I have stomach probs anyway so could not add in ciabatta bread etc even if I wanted to!!
Getting my latest blood test results tomorrow so will find out how the two tubs of clotted cream affected my cholesterol over Christmas!! That has been my only deviation off from the med foods for at least 18months now so the results shall be interesting.
I cook with coconut oil but to help salads travel in my stomach I honestly heap olive oil dressing all over my salad-its literally swimming in it!!
My hubby not diabetic either!! He loves the med diet.
Also though, after my mastectomy I was feeling so cold all the time we changed to curries for a while... Now with the radiotherapy and feeling hot all the time I'm back to salads again....

You can apparently have a slight rise in cholesterol when you first start low carbing that will then drop, so it's something to be aware of .

Well... Just had best cholesterol results ever...
4.6 total
Trigs 0.6
HDL 1.6
LDL 2.7
Non hdl cholesterol 3.0.

So coconut milk in my curries and the 2 tubs of clotted cream over Christmas have been good!!

We used to take plant sterols from Healthspan... We changed these to plant sterols from Simply Supplements, so these may have helped..

I still think food has direct play and lower carb and higher fats help....

I'm so pleased too, but also wonder just how much some of the blood test results that have come back for the last two years were indicating cancer.... And now its been sliced out - that too has helped all levels to be normalised again...

B12 was off the scale high at one point...my consultant said "you don't look like you have leukaemia"-----but was it an indication of the breast cancer??

Sorry for diverting the post again!!

I am hugely relieved that for me getting the right food, the right plant sterols and getting the cancer removed has at least normalised all my bloods now...
