Hi All,
I've been low carbing for about four months now, weight loss was going brilliantly until New Year. Now I keep yo yoing up and down around the same 2lbs and don't seem to be able to slip below it. Not doing anything different diet wise, also increased exercise so don't understand it.
Had Metformin stopped for last ten days don't know if that's got anything to do with it? Don't think it has as this has been going on for the last three weeks now.
Any suggestions greatfully received.
Thank's
Maggie

I believe it is easier to loose weight on metformin

I'm in the same boat, I have been regaining and losing the same kilo for about a month now, also similar diet and more exercise. I am trying to view it as my body getting used to this new " normal" after a 25 kilo weight loss . I have come to realise that the key thing whilst getting through this plateau is to believe that it will resume eventually as long as I don't " give up" which historically I have done at this stage.

Today I re-examined my diet and concluded that one of my problems might be craving for potassium, magnesium or salt, so I have taken a couple of vitamin pills and added a coupe of boullion cubes to my food today, I currently feel less tired and maybe with a bit more willpower - so I am going to continue with this for a couple of days. I'm not on drugs .

You might find you have had a bit of calorie/ carb creep because you now have a deficiency of something and your body is encouraging you to take that little bit extra. In my case I have a craving for pork rinds - hence thinking sodium might be the issue.

I've never taken Metformin but it's an appetite suppressant so if you're eating as normal, there are other reasons. Carb creep? Body adjusting to the low carb regime? Maybe a fat fast for a few days would work. We all know that low carb is right in the long term but it does have its stutters.

I am also in the same boat and I did try a fat fast. I lost 4 pounds in 4 days and then put them right back on the minute I went back to my regular low carb diet. I am at 20 grams per day. I lost 35 lbs before stalling.

Totally agree.
This is where dieticians should be helping us!!!!

Me too, I lost 2 stone 2 pounds and then suddenly it stopped and continuing with exactly the same diet/exercise I have not lost another ounce in the last 2 months.
Weird isn't it.

It all depends how much you have left to lose. I lost 2.5 stone quickly, in a few months, then I've lost another 1.5 stone in about 4 years, maybe more. But the most important thing to remember, when you have stalled is that you are eating LC for health, not for weight loss as the primary objective. If you are able to do a lot more exercise, you may be swapping fat for muscle, muscle weighs heavier than fat. As the late, great Dr Atkins would say (whose theories are now being proven to be correct) you are not stalled if you are still losing weight, slowly, or losing inches. Try watching your measurements, or are your clothes feeling better, or are you into a smaller size, even though you do not seem to be losing weight? That certainly happened to me. And, most importantly, keep an eye on your FBG to ensure that you are retaining the health benefits of low carbing.

I tried exactly the same thing with my bacon and egg diet, I lost a kilo over three days, then went back to my regular diet and put it all back in two days, having then added 2 boullion cubes to my diet yesterday I then put 1.5 KILOS ON this morning - which after a day when I ate about 1500 calories, 30 carbs and walked 22,000 steps is ludicrous. I am assuming all of that is fluid retention caused by the boullion and that maybe the fatigue I was experiencing was dehydration. I did feel less tired yesterday afternoon and I did sleep better - so I guess I must need the extra water !

oh well - it just shows how hard it is to keep things up, no matter what type of diet you are on.

Ever thought of fasting ? maybe skip breakfast just have tea/coffee ....fasting has helped me through plateaus in weight loss. I try to have at most 2 meals per day. Usually lunch and dinner. This past week am away on hols so have been having breakfast and dinner (hotel has amazing breakfast buffet) not sure if I have gained until weigh in on Tuesday..but clothes feel the same. Intend to do 7 day fast when I get home then a month of zero carb to see how that helps.

How do you do zero carbs? Fasting I understand but zero carbs is something I fail on.

You only eat animal produce.. no veg it's not zero zero carb but as few as possible.
Meat, eggs, cheese . Mainly what I have been having this week whilst away from home.

then you have to go lower in calories

I think it has been well proven that weight loss or gain is far more complex an issue than just what you eat, and certainly far more complex than just calories.

For me stress and sleep play big roles. When I'm on vacation I eat more, especially carbs, but usually come home having lost weight.

That won't work unless you go very very low. Google search for leptin and stalled weight loss.

what is very low... I eat like 1000 calories the days I don´t excercise...
one could eat like what one uses of energy every day and never exceed that... and then go just a Little bit lower..
I suffer from cronical stress but do loose weight anyway, but my sleep is worse, but when sticking to my planed diet it is faling off steadily only with a few weeks plateau in between

then you have to go lower in calories

Years of low calorie dieting has taught my body to adjust to lower calories very quickly. So the weight loss stays stalled, even if I do drop the calories.

I firmly believe that all these very low calorie diets that are so popular at the moment are just teaching people's bodies to switch to fasting mode. Exercising on top of very low calorie makes it worse.

It looks great during the initial weight loss phase, and everyone thinks they have cracked it. But wait a few years. A tiny weight regain becomes harder and harder to lose. They will all be bemoaning the fact that trying to lose weight has become 10x more difficult, and they plateau at the drop of a hat. Been there. Done that. Got some really old T shirts as momentos.

Slow and steady is far better if you want it to stay off, and allow your body to settle at the new lower level.
