Hey

I've read loads about this High fat, low carb diet. What kind of amounts of carbs is classed as low carb?? And has it affected anyones cholesterol levels?? Im interested because my doc said my cholesterol is high apparently and I dont want to make it any higher!!

So in a nutshell, anyone successfully followed LCHF and seen their levels improve!!

Many thanks

I followed the above guidance initially but soon realised under 130g is not low carb. To me, low carb is under 90g. at the very least. Less if you can manage.

Sorry can't help with the cholesterol question as I'm on statins so have artificial levels and haven't been tested since March.

Your cholesterol should improve on LCHF diet - mine did!

how long was it before they started improving? after 3 months my cholesterol dropped but the next 3 months it had gone up again. I am going for another test in 3 months so will see if there is any improvement then.

James' total cholesterol (around 5.1) has remained about the same from the first test carried out 3 months in to low carb and a further test five months later. He is on what is probably around 50g carbs per day. However, his HDL ("good") to LDL ("bad") has improved from a ratio of 2:3 (HDL:LDL) to HDL being marginally higher than LDL. He has been told by a consultant diabetes specialist that he does not need statins (nor would he take them if offered!).

I'm moderate carbs, below 200gms, and my cholesterol went down from 4.6 on diagnosis to 3.7 at my first annual review earlier this month.

i should add i lost lots of weight and took statins for 3 months and exercised alot, i cant say it was only LCHF but im sure it helped

LCHF can raise cholesterol as the good HDL often goes up. But as total cholesterol never was of any interest you don't need to worry about it..

'You want triglycerides low and you will get that on LCHF. You want HDL high and that will come too.

ty but i cant take the credit for it, i was only concentrating on blood glucose and if credit to my score is due, its due to the good folks here

But you did concentrate on bg in a LCHF way and are now a model for new members, like it or not.

i like it, but deserve no credit, no more than a cancer patient should be congratulated for the chemo curing them, it was the information that cured me, enough with the compliments, i dont handle them well lol

Most cancer patient would go along with the recommended treatment though. As they should . but go on a ketogenic diet too by the way.

We, as diabetics, are usually told to eat a lot of carbs so it takes something to go in the opposite direction as you did. Self preservation? Courage?

Fear drives me too and I don't even want to think about adding more carbs. I keep to anywhere between 50g and 75g carbs. I was addicted to pizza yet I don't miss it. I've turned my addictive tendencies to other, less harmful foods. I look at cakes and pastry and all I see is poison. I'm also obsessed with keeping my food diary, something I would probably have refused to do 6 months ago, but it definitely works.

But what I really wanted to say was, more than anything else, it's nightie dancing that helps me lol

I started the LCHF on 1st Feb this year, BG has improved, due for a cholesterol test soon. The biggest shock has been that I have never felt hungry but the weight has melted away and I feel great. Slight mishap with a week's holiday in France (first white bread for almost 3 months!) but back on Burgen now. I have lost most fat round my stomach. SIZE 12 JEANS NOW!!!!! Unbelievable! All those years buying low fat this, low fat that, being told to fill up on carbs- wish I'd known this way of eating years ago!
