About 5 weeks ago I posted a thread on this site saying "confused over conflicting advice". I had just been told by my doctor that I was T2 diabetic. I had no symptoms and had undergone a simple yearly health check. Needless to say this came as quite a shock. She went on to say that I must immediately start on medication to reduce my glucose levels. When I suggested that I try diet and exercise first she grudgingly suggested that I try a low sugar, low fat diet (note I was only a little overweight at just under 10st and 5'5) On further questioning I found that she didn't have a clue about how to eat a low sugar, low fat diet and recommended that I eat only green or unripe fruits and green vegetables, low fat yoghurt, cheese, milk etc and plenty of protein. This didn't sound like a very healthy diet to me so I decided that I would look for a second opinion. The second doctor I saw told me that with my readings I was not T2 but prediabetic. She was very sympathetic and was completely on board with the idea of no medication and diet and exercise. She gave me the website address of diabetes.co.uk and of Diet Doctor and, having read all the articles, I felt that the advice I was reading made sense. It sounded like a healthy, balanced approach so I started the video course and embarked on a LCHF diet.
Am I glad that I did! Five weeks later eating about 20-40 carbs a day and as much fat as I want to feel full (with very few side effects, only mildly aching calves, and absolutely no hunger pangs) I have just re-done my blood tests to find that my fasting glucose count is down by 32 points and is now within the "normal" range, my cholesterol risk factor has gone from 3.7 to 3.3 (despite all the butter, coconut oil, dairy and coconut cream) and my liver function is better now than it was before. (I also lost about 12lbs in weight which was a bonus.)
I have yet to discuss these results with either doctor but whatever they say I'm sticking to this diet. It works. And I feel great.
