Hi,

So I was diagnosed with T2 this week and I'm still wrapping my poor addled brain around the fact that every "healthy" thing I like will kill me, but the "unhealthy" stuff will save me. I'm both delighted and confused, but getting there.

2 months ago, my other half had a TIA (mini stroke) and was diagnosed with hypertension and started on the dash diet.

She is still struggling to wrap her head around her diet and what she can and ca't eat and bless her she is trying to get to terms with mine too.

Is there anyone on this LCHF diet that has hypertension? How has the diet worked with the hypertension?

Are there any meals that are compatible with both LCHF and DASH?

Cheers

I had high blood pressure pre keto and it has normalised on it.
Why don't you both give keto a try? Your partner may find it easier and you can eat the same stuff..
also LCHF is yummier!

I am still diagnosed with Hypertension, although I now don't need to take any medication to maintain my BP under 120/75

Before I was diagnosed with T2D I struggled to keep my BP under 160/90 even whilst taking Amlodopine.

I have followed a Low Carb/Keto lifestyle ever since I was diagnosed T2D in 2015, and lost a ton of weight and have become far healthier in the process.

PS. I have no idea what a DASH diet is.

Is there any reason why your wife can't change from the Dash diet to low carb so you can both eat the same meals? It would make more sense to me.

Coincidentally this short video popped up in my feed today. It's about keto flu but does mention hypertension.
Hope it helps a bit. About four minutes long.

Hypertension here too, probably part of my metabolic syndrome and genetic makeup though as my 6 stone, 98 year old mother has a BP that would kill a horse.
I’ve been hypertensive since my 30’s which coincided with gaining weight and I’ve tried the medications for it but without any reduction.
The only time I can get it down to a reasonable level is dropping my weight to very skinny and I’ve only got there once on keto/LCHF as the only way I’ve achieved that is near starvation. I wasn’t hungry but I missed eating!

I don’t medicate now and until ‘they’ are ready to investigate why I’m hypertensive (a la Malcolm Kendricks recommendation) I won’t bother.
My relative risk of stroke is high according to current guidelines (aura migraine sufferer too) but they are not based on people who follow a Keto diet so I’ll take my chances.

Give our diet a go, you don’t have to stay on it if you feel it’s not working but my feeling it you’ll be utterly amazed

Another Type 2 with hypertension here. When I was diagnosed Type 2 I was on ramipril and amlodipine and my BP was around 145/85. On diagnosis I immediately went low carb and my BP slowly dropped, as my HbA1c and weight dropped too. I eventually started getting dizzy spells when I got up quickly so with my GP’s blessing I stopped the amlodipine. I continue on 6.25mg of Ramipril and my last reading, done yesterday was 117/71.

High blood pressure, high cholesterol, fatty midriffs and T2 diabetes are all part of the metabolic syndrome associated with T2.
I am an odd ball. My BP has never been high, and nor has my cholesterol. I will skip over the fat midriff bit.

I was a metabolic black hole on diabetes diagnosis but, atypically, have never had hypertension. LCHF has had no effect for me in this regard.

I too have never had hypertension or fatty midriff. And I'll just skip the high cholesterol bit.

That's kinda the question to be honest. How have people with hypertension coped.

Of course she is pushed onto a low fat, low cal, low salt diet by the doctors so getting her head around LCHF will be even harder than it is for me.

Nice to see others doing so well with it, maybe once I've shed about 1/3 of my bodyweight and hopefully got my readings under control, we can consider it.

That’s exactly what will happen if you go LCHF.
There’s no evidence that salt has any influence on blood pressure and I bet your poor wife is hungry!

Aye, salt is explained in the video I posted up thread.

Of course, when you go LCHF you need to add salt because you lose so much from not eating processed yukkie foods and because you need to drink more.

Another one here diagnosed with hypertension and I am on less than half the meds I used to take. At my last diabetes review I started in on my normal little speech about suffering from White Coat Syndrome in anticipation of my BP being high and the Diabetes Nurse looked a bit bemused as my BP was 118 / 76.

I lived on the DASH diet for a couple of years when first diagnosed with hypertension and, after an initial loss, my body adjusted and I slowly gained quite a lot of weight.
