Learning The Hard Way

Hi. I should have done this a long time ago then maybe I would be in a better frame of mind right now. I'm one of these 'tomorrow never comes' type of people unfortunately. Was diagnosed type 2 about 8 years ago but never really took it seriously. Didn't try very hard to control the condition by diet so ended up on medication. Still didn't try hard enough & the medication has been increased twice. Don't test every day as I should do...hate needles. Found out today during a fasting blood test that I am also border line stage 1 high blood pressure (checked pressure whilst I was there at the clinic). So...I'm pretty much feeling sorry for myself & banging my head against the wall in despair when the only person I have to blame is myself. I drive freight trains for a living so when I get my blood results next week I'm expecting them to have an impact on my job if I have another increase in diabetic medication. Thats not even taking into consideration the high blood pressure issue. Also taking cholesterol lowering meds which I'm pleased to say have worked as I have been more careful there. And here I am bearing my soul to people I don't even know because I really am at a low point right now.
However...I am hoping to reverse things. The question is can I reverse things? As from 4 hrs ago I am on a diet (yes...overweight), I am eating only fruit, veg, fish & white meat. I am going to walk for a minimum of 40 mins a day regardless of weather or time of day. I am going to put my head down & try my damned hardest to reverse my declining health, secure my job & stop my life & that of my family falling apart. I need to do this, I will do this. I have no choice...period.
So there you have it. This is me. Will be popping in & asking questions & looking for advice. Any help you can give me, dietary tips, life style changes etc will all be most welcome. Thank you in advance. Regards.

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

Good luck on reversing your condition and improving your health, hopefully @daisy1 will be along shortly with her advice to new members of the forum.

Thank you. Right now I am very much open to advice as all I have done to date is mess up. So downhearted its unbelievable. But also very much determined to change things for the better if I have not left it too late.

Wellcome Caseyjones,
I only found this website about 2 weeks ago, it is FANTASTIC, lot of people will give you help, advice and above all support.
I will leave it to others to give you the advice as Im new to the low carb high fat diet (lchf).
Hang on in there you can make the changes you need.
Good luck

Hi, I'm hopeful you'll find lots of encouragement here. I was diagnosed 6 weeks ago and just reading around posts and posting a bit from time to time too has helped me learn a lot and also feel better knowing others are out there working on same game plan too. Take care and be kind to yourself.

D

Good luck with the reversal. Better late than never as they say.

Hello, welcome, and good luck.

Read round the forum and sort out a diet suitable for you that you can sustain. Lowering your carbs is the way to go, not just sugary stuff, because all carbs convert to glucose once inside the system. Glucose in the system is what we do not want. Potatoes, rice, pasta, cereals, bread and things made with flour are the main culprits. We also have to be careful with fruit and milk - fruit and milk contain a lot of natural sugars, which are just as bad for blood sugars as the refined stuff.

Join us and ask as many questions as you wish.

Welcome to the forums, do wander around as there is a ton of info in them, and it will give you things to think about and ask questions .. lots of questions .. @daisy1 will be along soon with your welcome pack .. Watch out for eating fruit as unless its berrys they will be high in sugars.

As someone else who had to change, because of circumstances.
You've made the first step on your journey to get your life back.
Have a read about the success stories and about how it is achieved by a low carb lifestyle.

Keep asking questions and read the links on this site.

Thank you so much for the replies. Yes I will certainly read the heaps of info on this site over the course of the next few weeks. Am trying to get some dietry info because I have to take into consideration lowering my blood pressure, avoiding high cholesterol foods & stuff that brings on gout. Sounds like I will be stuck on grass & water but whatever I need to do I will now do it. Finally the penny has dropped. Just hope I can reverse any damage done.

Hi. Don't beat yourself up, it's not your fault you're diabetic (OH no it isn't...) and you can start improving right now. We're all in this together.

I also have heart problems .. and on meds for blood pressure, and offered palliative care from the doctor .. don't be afraid of the LCHF way of eating .. my cholesterol has gone down to the normal level so am coming off the statins .. my blood pressure reduced as my weight reduced .. and I feel alive again .. last jan I was 21st with very hight bs numbers ... now I am 5st lighter and feeling good ...
It is possible .. but it takes a leap of faith to go against the medics eating advice !

True...but it is my fault for ignoring it this long & allowing other complications to arise. Wish I'd taken notice so much earlier. Afraid this is getting to the point that not only my long term health will suffer but also my job. Stress aint helping the blood pressure no doubt. Still...what is done is done, I need to do my utmost to put things as right as I possibly can now.

Low carb high fat. Or full fat.

Have a look at the thread called what have eaten today, to give you an idea what is recommended.
I am one of the success stories. I've never felt fitter and healthier!

Ok. Thank you. Will take a look. Glad you have done well for yourself. I need to lose about 3.5 stone. Day 1 ended on 2 pears & a bowl of salad after a 40 minute walk.

Hi Casey,

Much like you, I ignored my diabetes for more than a decade..but here I am, so it's NEVER too late. The people on this Board are fantastic & incredibly helpful so don't hesitate to ask any questions.

I am morbidly obese. With the Low Carbohydrate High Fat Diet, I have lost around 50lbs in under 6 months but more importantly my blood sugar levels have normalised. There will be a ton of information made available to you and that can be overwhelming. For me, the main focus is to bring my blood sugar levels down to normal and keep them there for the rest of my life.

The Low Carbohydrate High Fat Diet (LCHF) has helped me do that. Many experienced posters on this Board & I am sure some will be along to share links to how best you can do this.

Best of Luck.

Welcome! I lost 3.5 stone in about a year. A year ago I was the sickest I've been in my life when I was diagnosed type 2 - today I'm the healthiest. It can be done!

Now, I don't count calories or carbs or starve myself. I don't take any meds. My blood pressure is fine, my cholesterol levels are fine, my blood glucose levels are below prediabetic levels, I love to run and lift weights.

It's all by following a LCHF diet. I keep my diet pretty simple: no sugar, grains, rice, starchy veg, fruit, processed veg oils, and very little processed food. Lots of fresh veg, eggs, beef, poultry, seafood, some berries and full fat dairy (no milk, though).

Getting myself healthy was one of the easiest things I've done in my life - once I figured out what a healthy diet really was for me.
