Left hand 13.3 Right hand 11.2 ???!!!!

I'm trying not to have a nervous breakdown here. I've never seen anything like this before. I usually check my blood sugar on a finger of my left hand, and although I do venture into 12-s during the day, but I manage to keep things strict enough that I haven't been above 13 since the beginning of this year.

And when I saw this value I thought there was something wrong. I went and washed my hands with soap, then used a towel... went back and thought I'd try my right hand this time. Got 11.2....

Went back and washed & dried my hands again, and checked my left hand but choose a different finger than previously. 13.3......

All three test were done 30 seconds apart each. I did eat something that I haven't ate since my diagnosis (cheese scone). What the hell is going on?

I've been eating carbs and protein together (sandwich with ham or salami) for so long on top of healthier meals that I completely forgot that eating carb alone is a fatal mistake. I'm so upset and angry at myself. But for example last week I gave in to cravings and ordered a medium sized pizza, gave myself 4 units and devoured it in 10 minutes. Sugar before was 7 something and sugar after was 6.5. Now I ate just one cheese scone and I went over 13. Should have had some protein with it. Lesson learned.................but then again, I eat store brought joghurt with added sugar in it and don't get near the same effect.

Sorry I forgot to mention that I only drink water. Alcohol maybe once every 2 years... no soda, no cola etc.

Cheese scone was probably about 40 carbs hence your blood sugar readings. There's nothing wrong with your meter everyone has the same results two different fingers two different readings so take the average of the two and that was your reading.

No, eating carbs alone is NOT a fatal mistake. I often have snacks that are mainly carbs.

There are two issues here, I think. The first one is easy - blood meters aren't entirely accurate so it's very common to get different readings if you do a few tests in a row.

Second issue is the high after the scone. We're you sure of the carbs? Did you bolus correctly? I eat scones but I tend to choose the small pre-packaged ones as the amount of carbs in ones you might buy in a cafe or bakers can be higher than you'd think.

I don't think I used the correct amount of insulin (now that I look back). It's one of those "reality check" days... :sour:

You live and learn :) Next time you have the same scone you'll know to up your insulin. Scones are quite densely carby. I've underestimated the carbs before too :)

Same finger different readings somtimes, i try not to let it bother me.

As for carbs, i love em!i could never do a drastic reduction in carbs like some people can and being a fussy eater doesn't help.

My wife makes some lovely scones and i know how many carbs there are per batch she makes. Having said that things get thrown out a bit when she reduces the size a bit and or puts a little bit more fruit in than before. It can be a guessing game so you win some and loose some. The real big win is the tasty scone!

Martin
