Dear All
Thought I'd provide another good news story to swell the ranks.

Hba1c 54 on dx Oct 2018 (it took 3 visits to GP over 18 mths with brain fog and extreme fatigue prior to this). Shock, upset with self, shame etc. I was blessed to find this forum pretty quick after dx. Lowered my carbs and began metformin, initially 500 mg. I asked for a glucometer, which I got but only 1 px for strips. Did Xpert course, trainer not supportive of low carb, but I carry on.

Took awhile for my energy levels to improve. Feb 2019 hba1c 42. DSN happy and told me to come back in a year's time.

I spoke with GP and asked for an increase in metformin, which was doubled to 1 g, half morning, half night. Carried on with moderately low carb (70-100 g per day) and asked for a 3-month retest as wanted to try low cal diet in May (Cambridge 1:1, similar to Newcastle).

Lost 10% of my weight and bmi reduced from obese to unhealthy over 6 mths. May 2019 retest hba1c 38. Oh yes, feeling v smug! :D

I also asked for repeat urine test for then too as my gfr had been trending down, but most recent result is 87, so happy with that too.

Have started Cambridge 1:1 as I'm wanting to lose weight quicker than previously. I'll let you know how that goes in due course. (1st 2 weeks weren't great as the std packets are very carby and being powder that you add water to, made my bg uncomfortably high v quickly. Now been switched to the 'original' which has lower carbs. Post prandial bg spike not as big but still higher than I'd been used to on my foods.) Gonna stick it out a few more weeks to see.

I know I'm risking hba1c going up (temporarily?) but am hoping getting to normal bmi sooner might be an OK trade-off.

Thanks for reading, and all your posts, as I wouldn't have gotten this far without you.

Well done Dawn! I like to hear of patients who aren’t passive and take what the medics say as the only option. Brilliantly guided your nurse and GP into how you want this to pan out. With an HbA1c of 38 you have a bit of wriggle room if your sugars go up slightly while you are doing the shakes. Hope you can accelerate the final bit of weight loss required to reach target x
