Im going to a wedding shortly and although I'll be watching my food I'm was planning to let my hair down and not watch my intake of alcohol. I wasn't a heavy drinker before my diagnosis just an occasional drinker so I won't be consuming a large amount but would like to go and enjoy the day having a few drinks . Have you done this before or do you still do this occasionally ? What best and worst to drink? Has it raised you BS for days ?. What are peoples thoughts on this . Thanks

We're all different.
Some stick to dry wine & spirits with Zero mixers.
Others, like me, find that beer drives my BGs down & masks the carbs while the liver is dealing with the poisonous alcohol.
It's like a get out of jail free card.
Not recommended however.

Either way, one cheat day in a year won't cause any long term damage *

We all have those special occasions that we just want to enjoy, we are humans not robots - relax, enjoy but be mindful is always my motto. Like you say watch your food as best you can, I used to like a drink like anyone (still do) but find I can’t handle the hangovers these days. I either drink wine spritzer or gin with diet tonic or soda water. I alternate drinks with a sparkling water between each alcoholic drink, if I do allow some carbs from food I find my bs fine on the day but do run a little higher for the next couple of days - nothing I can’t cope with. Go and enjoy your day and don’t let overthinking spoil your fun

Hi, if you'reT2 doing low carb/keto (which is what I take from "watching my food" then my experience might be relevant. Alcohol will tend to suppress your blood glucose (because of its impact on the liver) so if you start off low and have no carbs to eat there is a risk of hypo. It's probably small for a T2 but it's there.

That didn't happen to me, but it's worth mentioning the possibility to someone with you who would notice if you start to behave a bit oddly. If that happens you need to have some glucose asap. A fruit juice should do it.

That's the warning over. I found, on the one occasion a couple of years ago when I tested while at the wedding, that I can manage spirits with no mixers, red wine, and a beer and my levels fell slightly (because of the alcohol suppressing etc). My levels were slightly elevated for the next day or so (high fives rather than high fours). I have done the same since and will be doing it again next week at another wedding.

What you might also notice is that you can't drink as much as you used to: that certainly was what i found.

Enjoy

My problem after a couple of gin and slims is that caution goes out the door and I start ploughing through the carbohydrate!

I'd suggest you take it steady. If you haven't been drinking for a while you may find you feel the effects of alcohol more quickly than in the past.

Enjoy the wedding though.

I agree with @AndBreathe and @Dr Snoddy . I used to be able to drink a fair amount, at least a bottle of wine. Now one glass makes me very talkative and a second can make me fall over, so much so both my son and husband remove me from it. I think its because I no longer have carbs in my body to soak it up. And those one or 2 drinks do make self control go out of the window and I eat everything in sight, the carbier the better!
So yes, relax and enjoy the wedding. Just beware it may not be like it used to be and forwarn your support team. I just keep diluting the wine more and more until I'm drinking water, no one notices and I'm still happy from the first!

In your shoes, I would go and enjoy the wedding - I do still have alcohol (spirits don't increase bg as far as I am aware and in my experience actually lowers it - as long as your mixer is sugar free of course). I wouldn't overdo the carbs but as long as you don't go off the rails totally (I would have my normal breakfast and more before I went so I wasn't hungry, usually it's chicken or roast beef or meat with veg for the meal which is fine - I probably would just have a little potato) the buffet at night could be a lot trickier and I would just have a few chicken drumsticks if they have them or small sausages and maybe 1 small slice of pizza - I wouldn't bother with the cake but I don't have a sweet tooth anyhow. 1 day isn't going to increase your bg that much or it doesn't in my experience and the next day just get back on the wagon. On special occasions/occasionally I am not as strict with myself and tbh I think that is what keeps my going! Enjoy!
