Is it normal for my readings to be higher after a 10 mile bike ride?
Had a very small tin of sardines in tomato sauce..low sugar content

Went out for my ride and reading was c7.2

How long after your ride did you take the reading,? I was told to leave it at least one hour. You should see a higher reading after exercise and then it should drop.

OK,thanks

I'm newly diagnosed so I suppose a bit of trial and error is to be expected

Yes it's quite normal, just your liver releasing some stored glucose to fuel your exercise.
The sugar has just moved from your liver where you can't see it.
Into your bloodstream where you can see and use it

Yup! Don't beat yourself up if you misunderstand something or fall off the wagon. Treat everything as a learning experience. We have all been there.

Hi Mick

I was diagnosed in February, and took up cycling for exercise, and like you I get spikes following the bike ride.

As others have pointed out they are to be expected, I take a reading around 90 mins to 2 hours after my ride to see how they are.

I have found also, that after 1 hour of riding, if I check my BG level, they are high, but if I continue riding for say 1hr 30 mins / 2 hours, the levels remain steady and even drop, but I do drink plenty of water before and at about the 1 hour mark

the high readings are when your body (liver) is releasing its stores of glucose to feed the muscles whilst exercising, as these effects can last for a few hours post exercise, it will be elevated then drop as the muscles are filled back up with glucose, you may experience a drop in levels around the three to four hour mark depending on how strenuous you have exercised. I would test at two, and four hours post exercise just to see what is going on.

enjoy your bike rides
