Ok, starting to get to grips with my new meter and have just tested 2hrs after eating my brekkie, I had 2 oatabix with milk and a cup of coffee, took my gliclizide tablet after eating and have tested my blood 2hrs later. My result is 4.1, that is quite low isn't it? last night my levels 2hrs after tea were 7.8, do you think the gliclizide I'm taking should be taken after a bigger meal, I have a headache but don't feel shaky at the moment.

Caz, 4.1 two hours after a meal is absoultely perfect. Watch out in case it goes too much lower, and if it goes below 4 then have a lucozade tablet (if you haven't got any, buy some in Boots) or a SMALL glass of orange juice, followed by a couple of digestive biscuits to bring you back up a little bit.

Do you take the tablet only once a day?

Maybe a type 2 wiht more knowledge will correct me, but I believe that the have a culmulative effect over the course of the day so maybe it doesn't matter TOO much at which point you take them...?

Oh good, maybe I'm doing something right then lol ... yes I only take one a day and was told to take it with a meal in the morning, but the pharmacist said I must eat enough with the tablet so my levels don't drop too much, so its finding the right balance. Yes, I carry lucozade tablets in my handbag just in case.

Hi Caroline,

Gliclazide appears to be available on two forms, a slow release version that will continue to work throughout the day and a quick acting sort that works only on the meal you have just eaten. The slow acting appears to come in 30mg tablets and the quick acting in 80mg tablets. Your tablet strength will tell you which sort you have been prescribed.

I also take a sulphonylurea medication, similar to gliclazide, and was advised to take it with my breakfast. I have often wondered whether it would be more effective if taken with whichever meal in the day has the most carbs. I'll ask when I next see my consultant.

Hi Caz72me
I drop a 80mg GLICLAZIDE with breakfast (two shredded wheat and coffee)
I also drop 1 METFORMIN with each meal

On a Working day breakfast is at 7.00. I find by 10 I am also around the 4bg or below mark and feeling a bit light headed. Now I eat half a sandwich with a coffee at 10
This brings me up to 5.5bg ish until lunch

Try eating small amount of carbs around 10 it works for me

Bob
