Hi all

I am diabetic type 2 and take gliclazide 80mg once a day. What happened today is not unusual but is it ok?. Basically 4 hours after eating lunch my sugar levels rose to 12.5. Then went to gym and did 30 minutes on the treadmill - just walking fast but not too fast as I have had hip replacements and cannot over do it - just a steady brisk pace and holding onto the frame all the time. Came back and my sugar level then read 5.4 – which is good I know but is it ok to drop by so much so quickly? Just wondered if I did more it may have dropped a lot more.

If ok, it might be worth me investing in a treadmill for home and exercising for a short while after each meal to being levels down. I know it's a not a licence to eat what I want – I still want to control everything well but I did not eat a heavy lunch and still my sugar levels went to over 12 after a few hours as well. My concern is really such a low reading after only short exercise.

Would appreciate any advise/comments

My experience is that moderate exercise has little effect on my BG, but that vigorous exercise raises it, probably because I am on a low carb diet & blood glucose is generated from fat/glycogen reserves.

Is there a good reason why you are on gliclazide & not metformin? When do you take it? What happens an hour or two after exercise? Does it continue to drop until you go hypo?

Hi,

I'm Type 1 and swimming has a massive impact on my sugars. The first time I went I let my sugars run high. Before I got in the pool they were around 15 (I took half the amout of insulin with dinner to what I should have done) and I dropped to 2.8 after 20 minutes of swimming. Very pleased I took my hypo treatment with me into the pool. However I usually do 30mins to an hour on the cross trainer at home and this seems to have little impact on my sugars so I take the full amount of insulin to cover that meal.

Hi Ian and Tumble

Thank you for the replies. After exercise (not too brisk walking on treadmill only) my Bg always drops considerably after approx 30 mins - had never gone up because of it. My doctor is reluctant to put me on Metformin as I have had a total colectomy (removal of colon over 23 years ago) and very prone to getting diarrhoea if wrong things are eaten or taken.
I take the Gliclazide in the morning before breakfast – after exercise the BG drops considerably - after further time, it gets even lower if I do not eat – do not let it go to hypo level - once it did - legs were like jelly – I was alone at home and became very anxious and stressed – level was 3 but ate something sugary ,
