Hi all

I know if your taking insulin you have to test before you drive.

I take 4 metformin and 40 units of levemir
When I spoke to my doctor she said I don't have to test before you drive when only taking levemir and tablets???

Am I wrong but is levemir not insulin ???

Thanks

It is an insulin but it's a slow release one. I'm not sure if the guidelines apply only to people who take fast acting.

I would call DVLA as I think you still need to test. The DVLA website just states insulin, not what type it is. If you are involved in an accident ( hope not ! ) you could be in trouble for not informing them. It's your license, not your docs :-)

The doctor is wrong. ALL insulin users must inform the DVLA and test BG before driving.

You will have your license restricted to a 3 year license and have certain categories of vehicle removed from your entitlement.

You must also inform your insurance company.

Failure to comply with the requirements to inform both the DVLA and the insurance company will result in you being considered to be driving without valid insurance should you have an accident. Your insurance company will expect you to comply with the DVLA regulations to test before driving - failure to do so could, again, be regarded as driving without valid insurance.

Is this a case of your doctor telling you there is no need to inform the DVLA or is it a case of doctor restricting test strips? If the latter, you do have to comply with the DVLA regulations, but the doctor doesn't have to necessarily prescribe you the means to that - although the majority will when challenged.

As your taking levemir insulin you must test before you get behind the wheel, I would make a point of correcting your gp on this matter.

Thanks guys I'm going to see her next week but I'm going to keep testing
Unless she can show me in black and white I don't have to test I'm not going to risk it .

All insulin users are required to test their blood sugars pre-driving
a vehicle .
The DVLA clearly states this recommendation .

Levemir is a basal background insulin and can induce a hypo if not
eaten enough to cover the units injected .
