Levemir & Eczema ?!

Hi,

Wondered if any of you could help me. I was diagnosed type 1 last year whilst 6 months pregnant with my daughter. They put me on novorapid and humilin i as my back ground and got on fine with both insulins. Once I'd had my daughter they put me on to levemir as apparently humilin is only used in pregnancy as thats the only one they know is safe or something.. anyway - I started using levemir and within about a week or so I started getting eczema. I've never suffered with it in my life so was a little shocked and went back to the doctors and asked if it could be related to changing my insulin and got a rather blunt no and handed a prescription for some steroid cream. Few months passed with the eczema getting gradually worse and I attended a nurses appointment and I asked again, who also said it couldn't be because it 'hadn't been reported before'. But I'm stumped, nothing else in my lifestyle or diet has changed except my insulin and I also noticed when I used a lower doseage my rash seemed to clear.

Anyone else suffered with this at all?! I'm hoping there is lol as it's bugging the hell outta me!!

Hello btw <3

Hi,

I have only ever used Levemir as my background insulin and over the last few months I have noticed that I have really drk skin on my head. I suppose you could say dandruff but it isn't. I always shave me hair really close with clippers and lately I have to whack loads of cream on my head or I just have dry, flaky skin...

Suppose that may be a mild type of ecezema?

There are many different side effects which can be related to Insulin, all types, not just Levemir. Whilst not specifically mentioning Eczema.......it can cause allergic skin reactions etc. Might be worth asking for a referral to a Dermatologist who might have more knowledge and experience about the subject then the GP and Nurse.......

Side-effects see notes above; transient oedema; local reactions and fat hypertrophy at injection site; rarely hypersensitivity reactions including urticaria, rash; overdose causes hypoglycaemia

Kato,

To determine whether it is your levemir insulin that is causing the eczema, why don't you insist that your gp or dsn change you over to a alternative basal insulin to see if this resolves the problem, if not you can always change back.

urticaria is large red itchy raised blotches, not dry and flaky like eczema. I've had urticaria for a few months now, I wonder now if it's the insulin. It's not at the injection sites though.

Worth you getting that checked out too HLW. The main point about the side effects issue is that it can cause a number of skin conditions which may include Urticaria amongst others, not just Urticaria.

Hello Kato

I'm almost sure that if you want to you can still carry on using Humalin as yr basal. My friend uses it and so does another member on this forum. They are not pregnant.
