I've been advised to balance my Levemir with my NovoRapid.
IE try to match units I take over a 24hr period...Is this the norm?

There is a concept of total daily dose (TDD) and the traditional way of managing this is to have 50% of your units as basal and 50% as bolus when on MDI.

Personally, I think you are better off determining your basal insulin on its own by doing a basal test and then working out what your insulin:carb ratio is and using this for meals.

It may or may not work out at the ratio you have been advised but it will be a lot more effective for managing your bg levels in the long run.

I agree with Tim; I was told initially some years ago to do 50/50 and it was too much basal for me. I was always eating to avoid lows and then correcting as I went high.
I saw a DSN in May who advised me to lower my basal and be more precise with my bolus and I feel SO much better and my Hba1c has lowered just in these 3 months.

This is an article about working out your unique basal rate http://integrateddiabetes.com/basal-testing/
It's in mg so you need the chart to convert them to mmol unless you already know them. There's a chart here http://www.joslin.org/info/conversion_table_for_blood_glucose_monitoring.html

I think input diabetes also have an article about working out your basal rate if you just google them.

Although it doesn't sound a big deal, for me it's changed my life for the better to such a degree, just not having too much basal, I would suggest finding what's right for you. It's a pity that one can receive such conflicting advice from healthcare professionals!

Hi. I must admit the 50/50 thing may be good to start off with but is not the best approach after that. First try to get the Basal right. This is easier if you are on one injection of Basal per day. There are more exact ways to get the balance right but my DN said to aim for a fasting level between 5 -7 mmol and this works fine for me. After that find a Bolus ratio that is right for you. Start with 1 unit to 10gm carb and tweak from there. Test quite frequently to start with until you find what works for you
