hello, I have not long been put on levimir insulin before I go to bed at night ,sometimes my sugars are on the high side 12-15 would I be ok to take a small dose of novo-rapid say 10-14 units and then my dose of levimir?before I go to bed ,I have been taking 40 units of levimir but it has little effect the next day,I do have 3 jabs of novo-rapid a day at meal times. kind regards trevor

Hi I would say no to taking the nova-rapid it is a fast acting insulin which taken without food could make you have a hypo during the night not a good time to have one

Hi trevor,
I'm on the same 2 insulins. I had similar problems with my morning sugars being high 9i guess they are your 12 -15 readungs). My advice is either eat less carbs at your evening meal or have a little more Novo Rapid at tea time. Don't increase it by more than 10% at a time though. If your too low before bed then it is a case of upping the Levemir 10% at a time till it has an effect. I suggest one increase then wait about 3 days to see what happens then another increase, and so on.
Good luck,
Mark

My son is also on Levimir and Novo rapid and it really is a case of getting the Levimir dose just right takes a while 'the previous post about uping the Levemir a wait a few days' is worthwhile advice. it takes a few days for it to settle into a pattern although I find it can act almost straight away my previous educator in NZ had a two day rule if the reads are high two day's running make an adjustment but, wait a few days to allow the body to adjust.

Sometimes just an extra half a unit of Levemir can make all the difference to the morning read.

The morning read has to be right otherwise as my Diabetes educator says you just end up chasing your own tail all day trying to get down to single figure reads :(

I found I had to increase the dinner dose of Novorapid to allow for his evening snack and aim to put him to bed on around 9 - 11 mmol to avoid nightime hypo's and he wakes up on 5 - 7 in the morning which is generally a good start to his day. this morning was 3.9 so only just caught him with his breakfast so may need to reduce by half a unit?

A bit of a balancing act but, with the right adjustments taking into account all the various other factors it works well for him. I've learnt a lot since his diagnosis Feb last year and still learning all the time took me a while to grasp the exercise he did yesterday (or, didn't do?) effects the reads the following 24hrs or, so? that takes some novarapid adjustments (sliding scales) to get right.

Decided Diabetes a law unto itself you think you've got it sussed and then it all goes belly up??? :?

Good luck! :D

My son often has a bedtime snack.

If his bs is below 5 he can have a snack for no insulin cover. The carb content of the snack will depend on his blood sugar level of course.

If his bs is 4-5 and the desired snack is over 15- 20g he will cover it with insulin using 2/3 of the dose he would use for his evening meal for the equivalent amount of carb.

If his bs is 5-7 he will often opt for no snack and no insulin.

If his bs is over 7 he will sometimes have a snack but give a correction dose of insulin factored in. This is particularly helpful if his bs is over 10. He gives the insulin, waits 30-60 mins till his bs has dropped and then eats the snack (often an ice cream lolly which is 30g carb).

These are some options you may want to experiment with.

If you are not sure of the doses to take you can work up gradually and check a 3am bs to see you are hitting the right insulin / carb sensitivity and correction doses.
