All of my life I have had a low sex drive for a male and never really understood why but ever since I was diagnosed with type 1 or shortly thereafter it has diminished to absolute zero. I am a 29 year old male thats had long term relationships and several one nighters in the past but now there is literally no desire to want sex.
Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone know of any solutions to the problem?
I thought it was maybe a symptom of depression but I am out of a depressive state at the moment and still nothing.

I don't think men have higher sex drives than women.

That said, you have a problem. Are you still on SSRI? Antidepressants can cause loss of libido, it's a very well known side effect.

High BG can also cause loss of libido. I hope some T1 will come along and tell you about this.

Occasionally young men like you develop thyroid problems, it's rare but it happens. Low thyroid is a dead hand on libido, believe me.

I have high growth hormone and insulin resistance with the added bonus of having caveman features. Pituitary problems that though. I stopped taking ssri maybe 6 months ago. The loss of drive came before I had any ssris though. Literally just could not be bothered with sex. October last year is the last time I had sex, before that would have been 2013. Just no interest at all. People have asked me "could you be gay?" Answer being "no, because if I was, I would sleep with men". Its such a messed up situation because I literally dont care about it :-/ I just know its not ....... evil word coming up......normal.

If I were in your situation I'd make a noise to get an appointment with both an urologist and an endocrinologist who knows anything about pituitaries and stuff. if your growth hormone is high for no apparent reason then you should have someone look into your pituitary. Ever had an MRI scan?

That said, I have no idea what caveman features is? On google I get all the paleo stuff.

I had tests done and it indicated high growth hormone. I have requested an mri scan before but I move quite often due to being a veteran. I am at university now though and need to get it fixed. Caveman features are like protruding brow. Its above my eyes that protrude the most.

The caveman thing might actually be due to high growth hormone. Have no clue as how growth hormones affects libido but wouldn't be surprised to hear it's bad.

I think you should get a proper hospital long term contact and begin at the growth hormone problem. Keeping BG normal is always a good idea too.

At what uni are you? Is there a reasonably good hospital near you?

My BG is in pretty good shape to be honest with you. When I go into massive depressions or something similar that I wont go into, I do neglect my BG levels. Recently i have been ok with that side of things though. I am at Hull uni. I have been to the hospital already but only to the walk in to get an emergency script. I do believe it's a good hospital though. I really dont understand how the change in hormone can suddenly switch off the drive. I rarely get pre sea checks in the mornings anymore if you get me.

MRI.

I'm in Scandinavia so am not sure how the health care system in the UK works in it's finer details but you need to get your pituitary checked and all the pit hormones.

The drive is all about hormones, men and women alike. Most things in life is about hormones, come to that.

Where in scandinavia are you dude? I have Danish blood from my mums side. Some of the nicest people in the world that ive known have been from Sweden / norway. I study languages at university and I have decided that after the three I am doing now I will be learning norwegian!

Hi @exrn, if you have acromegaly (too much growth hormone) it can cause sexual dysfunction. It also has links to diabetes and other problems could develop such as sleep apnea. I'm no expert, and the last thing I want to do is worry you, but you really really need to get referred to a specialist. My understanding is they can help but the sooner you get treatment sorted the more likely you are to not develop further problems with it. Take care Sue xxxxx

I'm a middle aged Swedish lady with T2 diabetes. Originally from Stockholm but I live on Gotland since ten years. I understand both Danish and Norwegian and like Norwegian poetry.

@LucySW lives in Denmark, @Heathenlass is of Norwegian stock, @AloeSvea is Swedish I think and @Scandichic is English but fluent in Swedish.

Did I even mention I am going for sleep tests next month? Sleep apnea is well on the radar. Thanks Sue x

I will keep you all updated no problems. It just seems that I went from full fitness to falling to bits overnight. Fingers crossed we can get it fixed.

exrn, perhaps you are just asexual (there is no black and white in terms of sexuality, it is a spectrum, and it is possible to move along the spectrum over the course of your life).

I am a "demisexual" guy myself, I have almost no feelings of physical attraction to people I don't know. (But I have a very high sex drive.)

If you just feel you're "not normal", don't worry about it! Accept this part of your identity. Learn more at AVEN (www.asexuality.org).

If it's causing you distress, you should certainly seek medical help. There could be an underlying problem, or you could benefit from counselling.
