Hello everyone.

I hope everyone is coping ok today.

Just wanted some feedback. I had an appointment with a specialist nurse end of last year and she wanted me to go on a course to understand the Libra Glucose Patch monitor. I thought that you did not need to go on a course for this, just needed a smart phone. Has anyone else had to go on a course for this?
 
I did a few weeks ago when I got my Libre. Have to say there was probably nothing in it that I couldn't have found out elsewhere but some people probably do need it. It's only an hour, and will give you all the info you need. Also you get a free Libre sensor if you sign up!

We had to go to a group session at my hospital, and were all then given 2 free sensors.
 
There is no reason to go on a course and they are not allowed to make it a condition. Getting a free one is irrelevant as a type 1 as they are given on prescription. All info is available in tutorials on line and the easiest way to learn is wear one.
 
Having said that, if @47Linda hasn't used the libre before then I guess the course might be helpful? I do wonder of they are being a bit ageist here and assuming that anyone over the age of 65 might have trouble with the technology???

Was this before they became available to UK T1s on prescription?
 
They were making it a condition to slow down giving them out. Even then they were not supposed to make it a condition. Partha Kar the lead on Libre was pretty cross about it. I did the online tutorials 3 years after I started wearing them as I came upon them online and they were very interesting, but nothing that wearing one for a fortnight and reading the booklet didn’t tell me.
 
Interesting - almost like they wanted to slow down the adoption for funding challenges (but that might be my paranoia)

When I got mine, just had them added to my prescription by the GP (I requested them once they became available on the Nottingham Formulary- was buying them before they were on script)

Didn't get any training at all - imagine a page of A4 bullet points and a youtube would cover all you need to know to be honest

Good luck. I found getting a cgm almost as much of a game changer as getting my first glucometer 40 years ago....
 
I agree a course shouldn't be a condition towards getting one, as an insulin dependent diabetic you should get a green light, however if you've never used a continuous glucose monitor before then doing a course is a great way to understand more about how to apply it and then how to evaluate and act on the information you are getting from it. I gave my free sensor to a friend just diagnosed with type 2 and unfortunately it wasn't applied correctly so the sensor wasn't able to be used, having done a course would of helped with those initial nerves in applying the sensor and then what to expect afterwards and whilst I agree winging it to start is also a quick fire education it doesn't fill in the gaps like the fact the first 24 hours can be fairly erratic, compressions in sleep etc,

I get mine on prescription but they didn't make me do the one hour training, I just chose to in case there was any extra info in there I couldn't find online. Turns out there wasn't but I wouldn't have known that beforehand!
