Type 1 Life expectancy

I am over 50, have type 1 and have no complications.
Until I joined this forum, I knew no one else with type 1 of that age.
But, there again, I don't know many people with type 1 diabetes.
Or, if I do, we don't spend our time making it public.
I suspect we also get a little overshadowed by people with type 2 because 9 out of 10 people with diabetes have type 2.
Diabetes UK gives out medals for 50, 60, 70 and 8o years with diabetes: https://www.diabetes.org.uk/about_us/medals

As for whether it is worthwhile sacrificing good control for a good time, I would say you can do both.

I hope I get to 50 years too :)

and has also just discovered freestyle libre which he loves

Good to hear!

If you have a kindle, can I suggest having a look at Stephen Ponder's book, Sugar Surfing?

He's an American endo who is also T1 so he's dealt with it both personally and professionaly. He was one of the earliest users of cgm.

The book is full of usefil tips on how to get the most out of cgm. It helped me a lot when I first got libre, that whole idea of using the graph to anticipate possible lows and highs and then take small steps proactively to even the line out instead of dealing with s hypo or hyper after it's happened.

He might also want to consider getting one of the transmitters, blucon or miaomiao, which turn libre into proper cgm, sending readings to a phone app every 5 mins so he gets hypo and hyper alerts and a few other useful things too.
