Has anybody got any advice on insurance companies that will insure type1 ? I have been turned down in the past during COVID and then because I had heart surgery as a child, even though my heart is fine since surgery and I don't take any medications.
Thanks in advance

Hi Sam. Do you mean for life assurance or another type of insurance?

Most companies (actually, can't think of any who don't) offering life assurance will consider people living with Type 1, but of course will uderwrite according to your medical history, the amount of cover and their "book". Their book is their existing risk for folks similar to the person applying.

I imagine underwriting for life cover, during Covid times was tricky for anyone, but of course, it was thought for some time that those living with T1 were at significantly more risk than "normal folks".

Were you actually told by the company you applied to that you were declined due to your historic heart surgery, or was that your conclusion, because you couldn't see any other reason?

Your best bet, in my view would be to use an Independent Financial Advisor (IFA) who should have some insight into the various companies' underwriting positions and risk profiles. An IFA may charge a fee, but could save you a lot of effort.

If you are looking to insure against a critical illness or your income, those are bigger challenges for T1s.

Can I get life insurance if I have been diagnosed with diabetes?
You can get life insurance if you have been diagnosed with either
type 1 or type 2 diabetes, provided your diabetes has been well
managed for a period of at least 6 – 12 months. However, for those
people whose diabetes is well managed, they may or may not be
approved for life insurance if they have any additional health conditions.
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Smoking
  • Obesity (BMI of 30 and above)
  • High blood pressure (which is not well managed)
Although diabetes is a serious medical condition, it doesn’t mean those
who live with it can’t take out a life insurance policy. The cost of life
insurance when you have diabetes tends to be higher compared to
those without it, as they're considered a higher risk for insurers. The
premium one pays depends on how the life insurance company rates you.

there will be diabetic specific insurers.. BUT read the T's and C's.. as I did a lot of research a few years ago, and found that whilst I was able to get cover, they would not directly cover the diabetes or related issues.. the trouble is, anything you die of will in one way or another be tied to the diabetes so no pay out... ive not looked since but just make sure before you buy

Hi i have some policies with Aviva. I can investigate more if you want and or i can give you the name of the IFA who sourced them for me. I pay a fair bit more but gives me some peace of mind for my family.
