Hi, my name is Pat and I'm 57 years old. I do not have diabetes, however, I have lived and am living with my partner who has Type 2 Diabetes. I have just read this forum for the first time and was astounded by how some people are treated when initially diagnosed with diabetes. It can be such a shock and what you need at a time like this is for all the support and help you need to lead a 'normal' life. I've read that doctors and nurses are sending people away with just a booklet. Diabetes (in my opinion) can be controlled well and you can have a good and healthy life with it. You just have to abide by the rules (and bend them a little). Complications can arise from this illness but most hospitals have a specialist area or clinic to deal with this. There is this forum where you can source help from other people with this illness. There are numerous books on the subject.
I hope each and every one of you get all the help you need and can have a happy life!! If there is anything I can do to answer any problems then contact me and I will do my best to pass on the knowledge I've attained from living with someone who had it for over 20 years (but has now passed away) and with someone newly diagnosed.

Firstly welcome to the Forum and for your offer of help to all us Diabetics, both young, old and new to this condition.
Like many reading your initial posting I'm sorry to hear of your loss, I'm sure from what you have said and with your caring attitude to diabetes that you went a long way in extending life of the indivual who had diabetes who you looked after for the last 20 years..
Sadly as you say in your posting, many newly diagnosed diabetics are simply left by the medical professionals to get on with it all by themselves. Having the shock of being to told that you have such a dissabling chronic condition is bad enough, but in many cases all that the new diabetic receives is a simple diet sheet (I'm doubtfuly if it's any good to start with) , diabetic medications, a follow up with the State registered dietician, and if they are particurly lucky, the oppertunity to attend a basic diabetes introduction training course.
I would advise anyone newly diagnosed with diabetes to join this site. It's truely a wealth of diabetic information.
