I'm new to this self testing. I am really trying to change my eating habits.
Dinner tonight was chicken salad and where I used to have a mars bar or similar as an after dinner treat I had instead an orange and a banana.
2 hours after eating my result was 10.4.

Should I now start looking at reducing my fruit intake? I've always had lots of fruit, it stems from when I was a kid and my parents had a fruit and veg shop.

The only other thing I do to excess is drink coffee - white no sugar - proper coffee not de caf, probably 10 mugs a day.
Does coffee have an impact on test results?

I think you will find the Orange was OK but the Banana is a definite no ! The Banana is a high GI food 65 on the GI scale and 20 carbs per 100g. I eat lots of fruit, but I check the GI content and then the carb content and that makes my decision easy as to what fruit is suitable. Testing afterwards just confirms what is good or bad.

Here is a link to a GI site which is very useful.

Hi Dave,

Some people can tolerate fruit better than others. All sweet fruits spike my blood sugars badly, so I just don't eat them. Your spike may well be down to the fruit, although your bg before eating, and whatever was in your salad may have contributed.
Coffee will have a negligable effect on your bg. The milk on the other hand may well raise your bg due to the natural sugar (lactose) it contains. Cream in your coffee might work better for you (does for me!)

Bloody hell. No Coffee No Bananas No Mars Bars.

I asked my GP once for diet advise and he said ' whatever you like, don't eat it '

Not joking was he!!

Ah but look on the bright side Dave.
No bananas or Mars Bars, but a big hello to fillet steak, cheese and wine. Not a bad deal really?

Granola MAY be OK. All depends what it does to your Bg levels ? Try it and test would be my advice.

A suggested dessert for me would be Natural Greek full fat yogurt, with berries and a sprinkle of grated 85% chocolate and a few toasted flaked almonds. A swirl of whipped cream in there somewhere would be nice too.
Bananas are reserved for just a nibble of grandchild's one.

Coffee in moderation is good for you - it may even reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, but I wouldn't advise anyone to have more 3 cups a day!

Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed a long time ago and so (while I count carbs), I am not too familiar with gauging foods based on their GI. I understand what glycemic index is, but just not sure what GI levels I should be aiming to eat. Can anyone give me some guidance about what GI they aim to keep their diet to genearlly, etc.

Thanks!

Personally I don't aim for a certain GI but choose those foods within each type that have a lower GI.The tables give an indication but you also have to check results on your own blood glucose.
Waxy small potatoes boiled or browned quickly in a little oil rather than starchy old potatoes.
Brown , basmati and wild rice rather than rissotto or sticky rice.
rasberries, strawberries or cherries rather than mango or pineappple (actually with fruit I take the portion size into account, ie I eat far more strawberries than pineapple)
multi grain (with 'bits'), rye, barley or sourdough bread rather than 'wholemeal' or white.
wholemeal pasta cooked al dente rather than very soft white.(an surprisingly machine dried rather than 'fresh'

Lowering overall gi by adding 'good' fats such as oil and vinegar dressings to side salads or to veg.
Lots of ideas on the glycemic index website.

That is the best summation of controlling your blood sugar that I have ever read! I don't enjoy food anymore as most of my fabourites are semi-banned. I cry

How about tea, other fruits ,and dark 85% chocolate!!! You can learn to love other things !!

I am eating better than I have done for years and my blood glucose control is much much better.

I seem to have lost whatever there was of my sweet tooth and love minimum 70% chocolate and greek yoghurt, cream, almonds and blueberries is a heavenly dessert.

I made a delicious dessert the other day with a couple of squares of 70% melted chocolate, mixed with a tub of mascapone cheese and just enough sweetener. One tub of mascapone cheese makes 2 servings. The original recipe suggested using good quality instant coffee to flavour it.

Just had a reading of 3.1 and feeling like ****, the first thing I grabbed was a bowl of frosties. Mainly cos I couldn't see anything else sugary.
Was that a genuine hypo?
I have to pick my wife up soon so how long will it be before I'm safe to drive?

Hi marzeater.

Anything below 4 mmol/l is considered a hypo. You need to take a sugary drink and then a small snack to boost your Bg level. Test with your m eter before driving and make sure you feel normal. It is dangerous to drive with low Bg levels such as mentioned. It is also illegal !!

You should always have something like Lucozade, Glucotabs or Coke (Full not Diet) around if you are likely to get to Hypo levels. See link re: Glucotabs.
