Link Between Statins and Diabetes

Not a good way to start the week - I did not expect this development and it makes me wonder how statin taking affects those who already have DM. 8)

"Dr. Joseph Mercola, a leading physician and blogger, is warning that the cholesterol drugs, known collectively as statins, are linked to an increased diabetes risk . Looking at a number of studies and analysis of statins in a report published on his blog on November 28, Dr. Mercola warned that statins increase insulin levels and blood sugar, resulting in one out of every 498 people placed on a statin regimen eventually developing diabetes due to the drugs’ side effects. "
 
Third paragraph from the bottom says:

''but determined that the cholesterol lowering benefits outweighed the diabetes risk''

Therefore you would have to conclude which is worse, the risk of developing diabetes or preventing a heart attack or stroke by taking a statin?

The one in 498 figure may sound alarming but how does this compare with the odds in general to those not taking a statin, could that one person not be predisposed to developing diabetes anyway.....who knows?

Not defending statins by any means just trying to add some balance to the debate! :)

Very good point. People take statins because of high cholesterol, PARTLY caused by diet - maybe that same diet makes them more prone to diabetes? I use to love my chocolate with gooey centres (creams etc) That could well have worsened my cholesterol, AND led to my T2, even though I wasn't overweight. Does the study show definitely that statins in themselves raise sugar levels, or do the people taking them have raised BGs? Be interesting to know how much statins raise BG if that's the case.
