Hi, well tomorrow will make it exactly 1 week since I found out that I have type 2.

I went to see the GP yesterday and he's changed my BP meds, booked me in for a blood test on my kidneys and asked me to see the diabetic nurse, who I saw today. She has organised me to have a HBA1C for next week, checked my feet that are ok, made an appt for a retinal photo, dietician appt made and asked me to have another eye test done at my opticians, which I also did today and they have changed my glasses, as my sight has worsened since my last check :( I am due to have a repeat HBA1C and cholesterol test in 3 months time when she is going to review my diet and decide on what meds I need if any...

Anyway, since I have been on my new diet since then, cut out sugar, snacks etc.. Drinking plenty of water and eating lots of veg etc... I decided to weigh myself today since its nearly the week and I have lost 10lb :D Can't tell you how happy I am with that. Hopefully when I go back in 3 months I wont need meds :)

I also have bought the SD Codefree monitor and I am just awaiting it arriving then I shall start checking my levels - how many times a day do you recommend?

You really have hit the road running, well done! I was exactly the same. :D

Ideally to begin with test as soon as you wake up, your FBG (fasting blood glucose) will give you an idea of how dawn phenomenon is hitting you, you may be able to change your night time eating to help. You need to test before meals, then 2 hours after. The reason for this, you don't want your meal to spike you to much. I would say if you spike say 2mmol/L or more, then either try a reduced portion of the food that spiked you, or cut it out. It may also help to take a before bed reading then you can compare in the morning.

This level of testing won't last forever. I rarely test when I first wake up, and never before a meal. I occasionally test before bed, but I do snack in the evenings, and like to know my BG is ok before I go to sleep.

Good luck.

Hi just before I was diagonsed I went to the opticians with blurry eyes, for the first time ever I had glasses (had photographs done and showed no signs of diabetes.)

Around 3 weeks later my eyesight was slowly getting worse, started drinking loads, anyway was diagnosed as type 2. After my levels started coming down I went from short sighted to not being able to read and now my sight is back to how it was.

When I spoke to my son's optician - who will be mine when the time is due (not going back to the optician that tested me but will give them their due I did get a refund for my glasses) she recommened that I didnt have a basic eye test(usual optician test) until my levels settled a bit eg maybe 3-4 months after diagonise as the eyes can change with the change in blood sugar levels.

Anyway what I am trying to say is dont be surprised if your eyesight changes again as your levels change.

Well done on your weight loss, Im still battleing with mine.

With the testing I was told by my GP to test before and 2 hours after breakfast, lunch, dinner and before bed. Now I have been told to test when I try something different, when I feel ill and the odd random test - used to feel like a pin cushion but it was worth it just to see how food effected me.

Wishing you all the best :D

Totally agree with iggy-lil

There are many examples on this forum of people going back to glasses they had years ago.

My optician also said no point doing eye test til things had settled down a bit I had it done 3 months after diganosis.

Thank you :) I've worn glasses for years now but I had noticed that I was getting a lot of eye strain so maybe my new glasses will help for the time being.

Yes, I was shocked too at my weightloss but I have worked very hard to do it. The nurse said its common to lose a fair bit in the first week as its water that losing and my weight loss should slow down. Either way, I am not knocking it and i'm proud of myself for being so good on my first week :)

Well Done on your weight loss  and good luck with whatever treatment you have......maybe not much if you cobtinue like this  Kate
