Liver Dump?

Hi everyone,

I woke up with the highest fasting BG level since diagnosis this morning (7.3, I'm normally around 4.5), and I'm wondering if I've had my first liver dump in the night. My ususal BG after a snack before bed is around 4.5ish, last night I had a couple of slices of Sainsburys Free From brown bread before bed which usually lowers my BG for 2 hrs then raises it for the next 2-3 by about 0.5mmol, so I might wake up in the morning with a slightly higher than usual BG (no more than around 0.5mmols more than usual though).

I had quite a long walk yesterday, and even after tea my BG was only 3.9 (usually it's mid to high 4's at this time), so if the bread would have lowered my BG slightly and then wouldn't have started raising it until 3-4 hours after eating it, does this mean that my bg might have dropped enough for a liver dump and then been increased even more by the slow release carbs from the bread?

Should I be eating more carbs at tea/supper on the days I exercise a bit more than usual and should these be faster release carbs? :?

Juggling diabetes BG is such hard work

I would have thought that an AM liver dump would have pushed your levels up by more than 2.8 mmol/L, but I do wonder about the bread, when you say 'free from' I assume you mean it is gluten free but I suspect that it will still have a whole heap of carbs, one I checked on line called Genius Free Brown Bread has 16.2g of carbs per slice so two slices would be over 32g of carbs quite a big hit for a night tine snack I would have thought.

But as the bread is your usual bed time snack I dont see how it would suddenly give different results, more likely IMHO it was caused by something else, there are many things that can affect bg levels from stress to hormones of one sort or another, it could just be a blip, unless it starts happening every morning I would just forget it :D

Yes agree with Sid just forget about it unless it becomes a regular thing. Did you retest? Could have been just a duff reading so, bad strip, dirty finger, not enough blood etc. Likewise you could be fighting a bug without even realising it.

You say you normally have a bedtime snack, but you don't say it's normally two slices of bread, just that you often have that bread. Is it a normal bedtime snack? Because if not, you may find that how your BGs respond to that bread at night, when you're inactive, ( :?: :***: )(not wishing to assume too much here!) is totally different to how you respond eating it during the day.
I can have 2 slices burgen at lunch with no impact; eaten at night, I KNOW i'd have high waking BGs.

Thanks for your replies, sorry I didn't have a chance to reply yesterday.

I don't think my high BG could be down to the bread, I bought it as a one off treat as it contains loads of carbs (23g in two slices), but when I tested after eating it, it lowered my BG for the first 2 hours, then raised it slightly and hit the peak 4 and 5 hours after (the peak was only 0.5mmol more than my starting BG though). I thought this was a bit odd considering that there were so many carbs in it, so I've tried it quite a few times and the results have always been the same. Might give it another few tests just to make sure! I tend to handle carbs much better in the evening, which is why if I'm going to eat carbs I'll tend to do it later on.

So the 7.5 reading I had yesterday was probably just a blip (wasn't a dodgy strip 'cos I tried it twice :)? I'm not sure I've ever had a liver dump, so I'm not sure how how it would affect BG, would it raise it by a much larger amount than 2-3mmols then?

I'm such a control freak that the odd high number really annoys me, I have been trying to relax about my numbers a bit more just recently, but I'm a bit scared that once I start doing that I'll be on the slippery slope to eating rubbish again. I did have chips for tea last night, but then I had spent 3 hours walking around a zoo in the scorching heat so I felt like I deserved them! :D
