living alone with type 1 - tips req,d.

Hi I'm type 1, and lived alone for 3yrs and been on the pump since March. As long as I have lucozade under my pillow and my metre under my pillow I don't find it's an issue going hypo and treating it during the night. My hypo awareness is ok, but I've even had dreams I'm hypo then woke up hypo so my body tends to know what it needs. I find it easier on the pump as I don't need food or carbs after initial lucozade to treat hypos, so means I can get straight back to sleep. I personally would stop the 2am testing as if you have hypo awareness you'll wake up! I've had to learn to trust my body and trust my settings on my pump.

My diabetic nurse advised me that if I'm hypo during the night and it's a regular occurrence then it's easier to adjust the pump and reduce the basal rate for that timeframe which takes away the unnecessary worry of silly testing times.

Also I would add- you could go hypo at any point when your asleep, just because you test at 2 doesn't mean you couldn't be hypo at 12, or 1am- again it helped me to talk to the nurse and get my pump adjusted so was getting less basal during the night which then starts to increase as it moves though to breakfast.

Everyone is different and no 2 days are the same but thought I'd share incase it helps.

Ps I never really have night hypos and my bloods are always below 10, nearer to 6 when I wake up.
