I have been to Lloyds for their free diabetes test. I had the pre-assesment on Tuesday which showed that I was at risk. So I went back this morning after a 12 hour fast and had the finger prick test. It came back as 4.8 and they have advised me to see my GP as this is low - she said that it should ideally be between 5 and 6. However looking on various websites online most say that 4.8 is normal so now I am sooooo confused as to why I have been advised to see my GP?????
 
Hi, probably as too high a blood glucose reading is a risk, so is too low a reading, there is a saying so I have been told by my [PN] practice nurse and [DSN] diabetic specialist nurse. Its 4 'hit the floor' referring to a diabetic 'hypo' . [please note that NOT everyone actually does tho!] Your GP is the best next step to be on the safe side even if they just keep an eye on you. Sounds perfectly normal and non-diabetic to me. Think that 3.5-5.5 is normal for non-diabetics. If you had alcohol the night before that might have given you an artificial low too.

Thank you. I have an appointment tomoro so hopefully will find out more. My dad was a diabetic but he was only diagnosed because he basically was on verge of a diabetic coma which was nearly missed as the gp thought it was heart failure - he had alot of heart related problems. I would much rather get sorted now than risk getting that far along
 
Looks fine to me Missmagic, that said you could still book to see your gp and discuss what was said in the pre-assessment at Lloyds.

I would agree with clearviews a fasting reading of 4.8 puts you in the middle of the non diabetic range and should be nothing to worry about IMHO. But do check with your GP if you are still concerned.
 
agree with what everyone has said - what does the pre assessment consist of? -is it just questions about your life style etc
 
Yes the pre-assessment is a questionairre form consisting of weight, age, bmi, how active you are and if there is a family history basicly. If you score 12 or more then you classed as being at risk and asked to return for the 12 hour fasting test (finger prick test). My score was 13 but you get 5 points for simply having a family history! I have followed the advise though and have an appointment with my GP for tomoro afternoon - thank you for all your replies

Sounds like a very worthwhile test for anyone who may be at risk, is this questionnaire part of the free meter promotion?

A fasting test doesn't say much as your blood glucose will be at its lowest - they should test you 1-2 hours after a meal. A high reading (above about 8, but could be much higher) would then indicate possible diabetes.

A fasting reading of 4.8 would please every diabetic. We try to get down to non-diabetic levels.
 
it was a free test at lloyds that diagnosed me with my fasting reading of 14 odd. Fantastic free service they offer.

The diagnostic test for diabetes is the fasting blood sugar test. I was diagnosed with a fbg of 12, not by Lloyds but by the ASCOT study team (a trial of blood pressure and cholesterol treatments)
 
well went to see my GP told him Lloyds had advised me to see him as my blood sugar was 4.8 after a 12 hour fast and he told me I wasn't diabetic and should be very pleased as I have a perfect blood sugar and he is going to have words with Lloyds
