LO SALT

I follow a very VLCHF diet and quite frequently get leg cramps in the night. I realise that its a problem of electroytes , sodium potassium and magnesium. I at least injest enough sodium and magnesium each day, but getting enough potassium is a little more difficult if I am to maintain my carbohydrate limits.

While shopping in a supermarket in northern Israel this morning I noticed a product called LO SALT, from Scotland. According to its nutritional values it seems to be a very good source of potassium, and cost effective even at the rip off prices charged here which are exactly twice the price charged by, for example, TESCO.

Anybody on the forum using this stuff with good results, ie whether it be for cramps or blood pressure reduction, any advice re inteferences with other medications or conditions will be much appreciated.

I've tried it as my husband (non diabetic) uses it for the low salt properties. I was starting to get bad leg cramps last autumn and my previous potassium source (bananas) are no longer suitable, so gave it a try in my cooking/baking. It may be coincidence but I seem to be OK now cramp-wise.

LoSalt is high in potassium which is not good for you if you have reduced kidney function or heart problems. Too much potassium in the blood can lead to heart arrhythmias.

The LCHF diet really messed with my electrolyte balance, so I finally settled on drinking a glass of hot water with 1/4 teaspoon of salt when I'm beginning to crave salty foods, perhaps twice a week now. On a daily basis, I take 99 mg potassium citrate in the morning, and 150 mg magnesium citrate before bed. This regimen has resolved the salty food cravings, and while I may get the beginning of a mild cramp in one of my lower legs as I'm waking up in the morning, it passes within a 2 to 3 seconds of noticing it, almost immediately.

I do eat numerous foods rich with magnesium and potassium daily, but it doesn't seem to be enough. I honestly don't know how anyone gets the recommended 4,700 mg potassium daily from food. It's a mystery...
