Hi Im new here
I was first diagnosed with diabetes 5 yrs ago again like some people i have also had doctors who were at odds with each other.I have fibromyalgia,functional nurological disorder,spondilosis,arthritis and a few others that im too bored to mention but have had these disorders prediagnosis diabetes some by as much as 15 years but nothing less than 2 years before.
Im on pain meds as well as other stuff but took myself off my diabetic meds about a year or so ago. Sorry I hope this isnt too longwinded but need to give a short background to explain.I have no confidence in my doctor ive had no back up since i moved here and also dont like the diabetic nurse my last yearly test was nearly 7 months late,I also have no idea what all the test result u all display mean let alone what mine are :lol:
Recently I went to see the bariatric consultant (im very overweight ) to discuss gastric bypass he didnt like that I have lost over 4 stone in less than 7 months nor the fact Im not on a diet so sent me to see gp saw a locum who sent me for tests at the hospital blood test showed no cancer, gastric consultant not amused but put it down to out of control diabetes (urine sample +4 for sugar).
Im due to see my gp saturday earliest i can see him I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them including bleeding from the bowels apparently a sign of out of control diabetes my meds also made me feel ill so i couldnt eat.I am so fed up and not a little scared everything is being blamed on the diabetes and everyone forgettin most of this was before diabetes diagnosis.I in such a mess not sure how im going to get out of this well an answer or two may help :?
Thank you Fiona

My things seem to be out of your control, I didn't realise the bleeding from the bowels was out of control diabetes I have that a lot and I keep mine fairly well controlled. You need to get the GP to take you seriously and make him see how it is affecting your way of life I know easier said than done but sometime you need to crack a few eggs to make the omlette. If he doesn't satisfy you see if he will refer you to some one who may understand the problems.

Good luck

Hi Fiona, welcome to the club no-one wants to join :?

I'm sorry to hear of your troubles, but I'm not surprised your Dr & nurse cannot solve. You seem a complex individual. You really need to become your own expert, & try different dietary & other approaches. A support group like this is a good start.

I strongly recommend you ask your Dr for a printout of the last few blood & other tests. High & low results are usually flagged, & you can him ask the significance.

Before I was diagnosed with diabetes 2 four years ago I had fibromyalgia symptoms, arthritis especially in my back and neck, and food intolerances and developed chemical sensitivities. I sorted out the chemical sensitivities by not using any VOCs (compounds found in aerosols) and by using non scented toiletries and household cleaning products and by elimination diet found out what foods effected me badly and then I found that the fibromyalgia went away. A few months before being diagnosed I started having diarrohea and lost a lot of weight. The doctor sent me for a scan which showed no cancer but it did show up I was having spasms and that I had diverticultis and the consultant recommended that I ate a bulky cereal and he explained to me why and I found a cereal that helped but then I had symptoms of diabetes so went to the doctor and was diagnosed with the diabetes 2. I did not have bleeding from my bowels and I have not heard that this could be down to diabetes but I do know that bleeding from the bowels could be down to piles, polyps or cancer so that bleeding from the rectum should always be investigated for the cause.

As for the arthritis I have read posts on the forums before that suggest that stiff shoulders is down to diabetes but I don't know this for certain. I cannot read books any longer because my neck and shoulders become so stiff if I bed my neck down for any length of time and I am so pleased that I have a computer and the internet now because I used to be an avid reader. I have read that a lot of other people with fibromyalgia have benefitted from avoiding as many chemicals as possible. I found VOCs, glue fumes, air fresheners, paint fumes, smoke and perfumes and some chemicals in food affect me but now not so much as at first. Doctors can jump to the conclusion that the problem is psychosamatic but like some people said when I had asthma 30 years ago but then asthma became recognised as not being so as is the chemical sensitivity now. As for bones I was just reading yesterday that hormones involved in the renewal of bone has something to do with diabetes as well.

I cannot understand why you have not been given hba1c test results? My nurse now takes the blood tests and then arranges an appointment for a review later so she can tell me the results. I think you should tell the nurse you would like to know what it is. Now losing weight quickly is good indicator that your blood sugar levels are out out of control and I would guess your fasting blood sugars are too high. You said you have bought a meter and strips what are your readings before breakfast?

Thank you for your replys I went to see my gp on saturday and this time got the results (have forgotten what they were now :lol: ) but needless to say my diabetis is out of control,cholesteral at 4.3 or there abouts, blood pressure 128/70 thats with no meds at all .He has booked me to go to the diabetic clinic 68 days away :roll: to go and discuss new injection although he did say ought to be on insulin :wink: .He has also told me to keep checking bs several times a day and if it goes up to 20 or above to give him a ring :? how ill be able get through to him i dont know cant even get an appointment.It does look hopefull that the clinic may explain more and I may finally get a grasp of my diabetes Fiona

Hi fiano60. Glad you got yourself off to the doc and that you have a clinic appointment. Did your doc say what the new injection was? It may be Byetta and there are a few of us here on that. Another one is Victoza but they don't give you that at my clinic unless you can't take Byetta. For me it has been tremendous and my BG's are back in order and in many ways I feel much better. A bonus is that it doesn't lead to weight gain and many lose significant amounts of weight. I hope you'll be feeling much better soon.

Hi Fiona,

You've got 2 pages of results - of course you can't remember & its all very confusing. Ask for the printout, then you can keep track of your progress over the years, & it will help you become your own expert.

Your BP & cholesterol seem OK. If your diabetes is "out of control" then 68 days is unacceptable.

To be able to offer more specific advice, we need to know:
your typical diet;
Blood Glucose readings [not urine] - overnight fasting; 1 hour & 2 hours after food & before the next meal, & at bed time, on a typical day;
your diabetes medication.

I am not on insulin, but I understand that improving carbohydrate metabolism means converting carb to fat rather than blood glucose, so it won't help your weight problem. Carb reduction will still be advisable.

Fiona, I presume from the fact they have ruled out cancer (Praise the Lord!) means that they have examined stool samples. Is the bleeding red or black? Red means the bleed is near the anus & is possibly piles, rather than diabetes. However, poor BG control is likely to aggravate other conditions.
