I am due to travel for the first time long haul early 2019. I always suffer with extremely swollen ankles and tightness of calf muscles even on a 4hr flight journey. I find it a bit scary. I don't drink alcohol pre or on board only consume lots of water, I also don't eat. I ensure my salt intake is to the minimum pre flight. I do get up and walk around as much as I can and do the seated exercises. Any other suggestions To stop this from happening? Thanks

Hello @Agnetha Welcome to the forum :)

Have you spoken to your GP about this, might be worth seeing if you can get some water retention tablets ? (i'm no expert on this by the way !)

Many people suffer from this. If you can, try and get a seat where you can elevate your feet either or one where there is room to put a bag out after take off to elevate feet. You can pre book with most airlines and see the layout of the aircraft online. I’m assuming by your name you are a woman so some very compressing support tights are very good at helping that. I find them better than compression socks or wear both! Exercise your ankles by rotating regularly and walking around when possible. Drink plenty of water too. Good luck x

Get the seat map of the aircraft type and the carrier. They should have those available on line. If you're travelling economy class, the best available are those just behind the over wing exits as the leg room is massive. If you CANNOT seat select before, then on the day of checkin, make sure you are REALLY early at the airport so you stand a good chance of securing one of those prized seats
